More Boats Sink Than Float at Algonquin's Cardboard Boat Regatta

Racers and spectators alike enjoyed the 15th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta on the Fox River in Algonquin.

Algonquin Founders' Days started off with a splash Thursday as nearly 100 teams participated in the 15th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at Riverfront Park.

The 98 teams and their crew members arrived at 4 p.m. to collect free sheets of cardboard and duct tape. Each team rushed to find an adequate spot in the park to cut, shape and tape their nautical creations.

Algonquin State Bank provided cash prizes for first, second and third-place winners of the Peewee Division (kids) and Adult Division.

Despite the boat builders' hard work, most vessels failed to sail - or float - for long. Only the well-constructed and well-taped finished the course from the shore to the middle of the river and back.

1st Place Winner of the Peewee Division: Aaron Kirk, 10, of Algonquin.

1st Place Winner of the Adult Division: Terry Knowlton, of Algonquin.
