Toll Hike Passes: What Do You Think?

UPDATE 12:00 P.M.: The Illinois Tollway Board passes toll increase, effective Jan. 1, 2012.     **************** Illinois Tollway officials could decide today whether to increase tolls by 35 percent to help fund a 15-year capital project, an increase that would help put the Route 47 and Interstate 90 full interchange on a fast track. Officials will meet today at 10 a.m. in the tollway’s Downers Grove offices. A webcast of the meeting will be available atwww.illinoistollway.com. Among the agenda items is feedback from the series of public hearings the tollway hosted in the last week about the toll increase. Anyone with an I-PASS will see their basic toll jump from 40 to 75 cents starting next year. Drivers using cash to pay tolls will be paying twice what I-PASS users pay. They want more money to feed it to the big contractors, the big engineering companies at the taxpayers' expense during a recession and it's unethical.   more ›

Area Residents Sound Off on Toll Hike

Officials hold public hearing in Huntley on plan to increase tolls, attracts a standing room crowd.

Algonquin resident Mike Poll came to the Illinois Tollway’s public hearing Friday night to speak his mind about a proposed 35-cent toll hike. Poll pays $800 a year in tolls. The increase would mean another $800, he said. “To me that’s insane,” Poll said. “I don’t have that kind of money. We are just getting out of the recession. Unfortunately, we lost 25 percent of our income. Now you are asking us (to pay) another $800 just to drive to work.” Tollway officials came to Huntley Village Hall to give information and take public input on a proposal that would increase tolls by 35-cents.
