Chinese New Year 2013: Year of the Snake

People around the world—including those in McHenry County—are celebrating the Year of the Snake.

It’s Chinese New Year 2013, and many Asian cultures around the world are celebrating the Year of the Snake with firecrackers and feasting. Considered the most important of Chinese holidays, the lunar new year celebration—also called the Spring Festival—begins on the first day of the lunar calendar (this year on Sunday, Feb. 10) and ends on the first day of the full moon (Sunday, Feb. 24). In Algonquin, 7.3 percent of the population is Asian while 5.2 percent of Lake in the Hills population is Asian, according to 2010 U.S. Census Bureau statistics. Celebrate Chinese New Years with the Kids

Teach your kids about a new culture and celebrate the Chinese New Year

  Have the dark and gloomy winter days gotten you down? Looking for a reason to celebrate this weekend and have some fun? Try celebrating the Chinese New Year and learn all about a new culture. Our family had a blast last year attending a Chinese New Year Party in Chinatown complete with a Lion Dance, stories, and incredible food. However, you can do some fun things at home to celebrate, too. I did a little research online and learned that Chinese New Year celebrations last 15 days and end with the Lantern Festival. Each of the 15 days has a different tradition or activity as part of the celebration.
