Voter Turnout Drops in McHenry County

In 2012, 66.1 percent of McHenry County voters cast their ballot, which is much lower than the 70.2 percent who voted in 2008.

Last week's election saw the lowest voter turnout since 2000 in McHenry County, according to preliminary voting results.  In total, 134,328 of the 203,225 registered voters in the county cast their ballot on Nov. 6. That amounts to 66.1 percent of registered voters, according to preliminary numbers from the McHenry County Clerk's office.  While well above the national average of 57.5 percent overall voter turnout, this year's turnout in McHenry County was four percentage points lower than the 2008 election. Schultz said the state has made it easier for people to vote with early voting, but it hasn’t made a difference. “It is frustrating all the work that is involved and all the work the candidates put into it. People just stay home and then complain about it later,” Schultz said. Voter turnout in Tuesday’s primary in Lake County echoed the low turnout throughout Illinois. Just 23.46 percent of registered voters …

November's numbers will be much, much, higher. This primary did not have any Senate races to vote on and a high pctg. of local contests were uncontested; and even though the media made a story out of Illinois finding itself relevant in deciding the GOP POTUS nominee, the math would indicate that it will either be Mitt Romney or a brokered convention.. neither Santorum or Gingrich had any real …   more ›
