A few ways Algonquin students are honoring America's vets today.
Today is Veterans Day and students across Algonquin will be honoring the men and women who have served our country. Here are just a few activities that some District 300 schools are doing: ALGONQUIN LAKES ELEMENTARY Algonquin Lakes students have all contributed to this year’s learning by making a Veteran’s Day A-B-C lesson in a DVD format. Every classroom was responsible for developing a short lesson about Veteran’s based on their chosen letter of the alphabet. This final 20 minute DVD will be shown to all students on Friday at 8:05 a.m. and then students will meet around the flagpole for our traditional Veteran’s Day Ceremony. Staff Sgt. Vito Deiure, 38, finished up his Army career as a recruiter and that’s the job that brought him to Lake in the Hills. The 1990 graduate of Maine South High School spent his first three years in the Army as a cook. He didn’t like that, so he became a chaplain’s assistant. “I’m religious, a Catholic, but that’s not the reason I became a chaplain’s assistant,” Deiure said. “I wanted to help. A soldier won’t talk to psychiatrist because of the stigma. But he’ll talk to a chaplain," he said. "Soldiers don’t necessarily want to talk about religion when they’re in the field. They want to talk about family issues and why it’s taking so long to get a promotion … things like that.” Deiure was once paired with the Rev. Tim Vakoc, a …

Mackeben Elementary School students gathered outside near the flagpole Friday morning to honor 20 local policeman, firefighters, servicemen and women. For the past five years on the Friday closest to the anniversary of Sept. 11, the school has invited parents of students who are first responders or in the military to dress in full uniform and lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. The students also sing a melody of patriotic songs. While the event is in response to Sept. 11, principal Jennifer Zayas said the school decided to honor local heroes instead of focusing on the tragedies of that day. She said the school doesn't talk with the children about the events that occurred on Sept. 11, but encourages parents to explain it to their …

This year’s field will have 2,976 flags flying in Carpenter Park, 122 Carpenter Blvd. Healing Field 2011-Carpentersville was organized by the Patriot Committee, a group of local volunteers whose mission is to provide resources and promote the vision that we must never forget those who perished that terrible day 10 years ago, and to honor those who continue to serve and protect our safety and freedoms we take for granted. I was very sad to hear from my children that there was no assembly for Veterans Day at their schools. Why is it that only Marlowe had a celebration and none of the other D158 schools celebrated the sacrifice of our veterans and our current active duty military. An assembly to teach the kids about why we celebrate Veterans Day has been common practice at the schools in the past. I do not …   more ›
