Teachers, Administrators in Newtown Acted Heroically But That's No Surprise

Extraordinary bravery is ordinary for teachers.

Like the rest of the nation, I was shocked and saddened by the horrific events in Newtown that took the lives of 20 innocent children.  What did not surprise me were the actions of the teachers and school personnel who died trying to protect them. We have all heard the stories by now — the principal and school psychologist running into gunfire in an effort to disarm the lunatic who invaded their school, the teachers who died protecting their students, and the students who did not die because of the quick thinking and bravery of their teachers.   Of all the adjective others would use to describe me, brave is not on the list. However, as a teacher, I am certain I would have done the same as the teachers did in Newtown. I’m not saying this …

Finance Committee Reviews Proposed Cuts for District 300

Many members of the committee were not supportive of suggested cuts to the school nursing and counseling staff.

District 300 Community Finance Committee members reviewed $8.3 million in proposed budget cuts Tuesday night for 2011-2012 school year. Many members of the committee, which includes parents and school representatives, were not supportive of suggested cuts to the school nursing and counseling staff, and a majority of the committee opposed a backup plan proposal to close Oak Ridge School. The board was split on a plan to eliminate the Preschool for All at a savings of $1 million, which was on the list should the state not send any money and if negotiations for $4.2 million in employee wage and benefit concessions fail. The committee members, who held a vote on the proposed reduction items, agreed with the remainder of the suggested cuts. …

D300 School Board to Take Another Look at Budget Cuts

A final vote on the cuts is expected on Feb. 28.

The Community Unit School District 300 will meet Monday to discuss proposed budget cuts. The first draft of proposed reductions, which listed $8.3 million in propsed cuts and requested union concessions on salary and benefits, was presented on Jan. 10. The school board will meet in the Professional Development Center at Westfield Community School, 2100 Sleepy Hollow Road in Algonquin, at 7:30 p.m. The board typically meets in the administration center's board room in Carpentersville but will be permanently moving it's board meetings to Westfield because it offers more space, according to a news release.
