Poll: Should Armed Guards Be In Every School?

The NRA reacted to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting by suggesting a variety of causes for mass shootings and suggesting that armed police officers be station in every school.

The NRA called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around U.S. schools Friday in the group's first public statement since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." A gunman killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conneticut on Dec. 14. Twenty of the victims were children. The shooting has ignited a debate over gun control. Vice President Joe Biden will lead the Obama administrations efforts on the issue, CNN reported. The NRA, however, argued that more guns, not less, is the answer to mass shootings. "We …

Teachers, Administrators in Newtown Acted Heroically But That's No Surprise

Extraordinary bravery is ordinary for teachers.

Like the rest of the nation, I was shocked and saddened by the horrific events in Newtown that took the lives of 20 innocent children.  What did not surprise me were the actions of the teachers and school personnel who died trying to protect them. We have all heard the stories by now — the principal and school psychologist running into gunfire in an effort to disarm the lunatic who invaded their school, the teachers who died protecting their students, and the students who did not die because of the quick thinking and bravery of their teachers.   Of all the adjective others would use to describe me, brave is not on the list. However, as a teacher, I am certain I would have done the same as the teachers did in Newtown. I’m not saying this …

School Officials, Parents Sound Off on Safety Following Sandy Hook Shooting

School officials are reviewing safety plans following the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn. last week.

Dropping their kids off for school this week has not been as easy for many area parents following Friday's tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn.  "Dropping off my daughter this morning was an exercise in self-control. I kept thinking of all those parents that won't ever do that with their little kiddos again, it was all I could do to appear upbeat and "normal," said Melina Everett, responding to a question about school safety on the Algonquin-LITH Patch Facebook page. Several other parents sounded off Monday regarding their thoughts surrounding the Newtown, Conn. shootings and shared their concerns over school safety. "Are there shatter proof windows on all the schools? If not in light of what happened that needs to change," Adrienne Dumser …

NEWTOWN, CT -- Connecticut police said Friday afternoon that 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at an elementary school after a gunman opened fire. Another adult was killed at a second location.   The Scene Police in Newtown were called to the Sandy Hook School at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call Friday morning. Authorities said the gunman was found dead inside the school. Your posts are getting more enigmatic. Are you trying to imply that I have been arrested for inappropriate actions with children? That's quite the serious accusation and extremely inappropriate, but I would expect nothing less from you. I have no reason to believe that you aren't what you say you are, but I'm amazed that you had a business in 50 states and however many countries when you treat …   more ›
