District 300 Proposes More Cuts, Union Concessions

Administrators proposed $8.3 million in proposed reductions Monday night during the Board of Education meeting.

District 300 administrators presented a a list of reductions to the district’s 2011-2012 budget during its Board of Education meeting Monday, which included over $5 million in proposed concessions from employee unions. In total, $8.3 million needs to be cut from the budget, said Cheryl Crates, the district's chief financial officer.  The proposed reductions assume employee groups agree to $4.2 million in wage and benefit concessions and an additional $1 million in insurance concessions and also includes $3.1 million in cuts to services, transportation, staff and extra-curricular activities, according to the Community Unit District 300 proposal released Monday. Should there be a future plan to reward those that take the brunt of the financial burden to keep the doors open and our children educated....Yes.   more ›

District 300 Begins Budget Planning

School officials expect financial woes to continue.

A preliminary budget for the 2011-2012 school year presented at the Community Unit School District 300 Board meeting Monday night projects a $7.8 million deficit. CUD administrators have only begun to compile next year's budet, but officials anticipate district expenses to exceed revenues by the $7.8 million, said Chief Financial Officer Dr. Cheryl Crates. CUD 300 is currently operating with a $5.3 million deficit for the 2010-2011 school year. The state of Illinois never sent $6.5 million it owed the district last school year. To compound problems, CUD 300 has not received $5 million in state funds for the current school year.
