Emotional Testimony Sets Tone of Newtown Hearing

A debate on gun control took center stage in residents' comments during Wednesday night's legislative hearing.

NEWTOWN, Conn. — On Dec. 14, Mary Ann Jacob was at work at Sandy Hook Elementary School. "The day started like any other day," she said. "Vicki Soto came in the library first thing in the morning to pick out books she could use in her classes that day, bemoaning the fact she'd spilled coffee all down the front." As she described the events of that day, her voice trembled as she told listeners that automatic weapons had no place in communities — and that more guns couldn't have stopped what happened. "Make no mistake," she said. "If there was a police officer in that building, he'd be dead." Local Comfort Dogs Bring Love, Healing to Sandy Hook, Newtown Community

Q&A with Comfort Dog Ministry from Hawthorn Woods: "Dogs created a bridge to help bring people back from a dark period and place back into a place where they can begin the healing process."

  Ladel, a Comfort Dog from St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods returned from Newtown, CT, after a three-day visit, where she helped spread some joy and comfort to children and adults recovering from the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.  Ladel lives with Pastor Tim Kinne and his wife, Deb. Ladel traveled to Newtown with three handlers, Deb Kinne, Lauraine Morajda and Kylie Yocum. Report: Newtown Gunman Had Asperger's, Shot Sleeping Mother Four Times

Nobody has claimed the bodies of Adam and Nancy Lanza from the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, CNN reports.

Updated 1:35 p.m., Dec. 18 CNN reported moments ago that the Farmington, CT-based Office of the Chief Medical Examiner says Adam Lanza on Dec. 14 shot his mother four times while she slept, and that she died of a single gunshot wound to the head. The cable network also reports that the medical examiner has confirmed Lanza had been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. According to the National Institutes of Health, Asperger's is a developmental disorder "characterized by a greater or lesser degree of impairment in language and communication skills, as well as repetitive or restrictive patterns of thought and behavior."
