Kirk, Durbin Schneider Tour New School as Sequester Removes Shine

Sen. Kirk and Sen. Durbin make first joint appearance in state at Great Lakes school along with Rep. Schneider.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield) made their first joint public appearance in Illinois since Kirk returned to full time duty in the Senate in January at a Great Lakes charter school they helped create which is now being hurt by the Sequester. Durbin, Kirk and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) met with students at the Learn Public Charter School, a North Chicago public school on the Great Lakes Naval Base, to see the new institution and listen to the students. “This is our first public appearance in Illinois since Sen. Sen. Kirk Gets a Fist Bump from President Obama

Mark Kirk and the president shared a moment as Obama entered the House Floor for the State of the Union address.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) had a close personal encounter with President Barack Obama as the President walked down the aisle of the House of Representatives on his way to the podium deliver the State of the Union, according to a report on UPI. Kirk, who returned to the Senate in January after spending nearly a year recovering from a stroke, fist bumped the President before the two embraced as seen on the You Tube video. Kirk Climbs 237 Steps Returning to Senate

Highland Park senator comes back to work just under a year after suffering a stroke.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) returned to work today as he climbed 237 steps to the entrance of the Senate side of the United States Capitol just under a year after suffering a major stroke. Assisted by Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kirk walked slowly using a cane completing the ascent 10 minutes before the Vice President was scheduled to gavel the Senate into session for the 113th Congress. Biden was not worried about the timing. “You’ve got all day, pal,” the vice president said to Kirk at the bottom of the stairs. To IMHO...would you have pushed for Franklin Roosevelt to resign? He smoked, drank martinis (sometimes it is said with his misstresses) and had servants spend hours dressing him everyday. His "service" to America included running for president even when he knewhe was deathly ill. Kirk Releases Video, Returns Home

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) released a video today showing himself walking without a cane or harness, working in his Highland Park home and giving an update on his health and progress since his stroke in January. When Kirk was first released from inpatient treatment at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in May, he stayed with family members. Now he is living and working in his own residence. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) released a video Tuesday thanking the citizens of Illinois in his own voice for their support during his rehabilitation from a stroke suffered Jan. 21 and three resulting surgeries. Kirk left the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago Friday to continue his recovery from the stroke at the home of family members. Kirk Heads Home From Rehab Center

Will continue out-patient therapy.

  Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk is headed to the home of a family member today (May 3) to continue his recovery from a stroke he suffered more than three months ago, according to a statement by his family as reported by the website Politico.com. According to Politico, the family's statement read, “We are happy to say that after suffering a stroke in January, Mark has progressed to the point where he can move home with his family. He will continue to work on his recovery as an out-patient at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He has begun a rigorous walking study program to further his mobility and independence while maintaining his schedule with staff. Kirk Could Be Back in Senate by Fall

Colleagues see an autumn return as a real possibility.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) is expected to return to work in Washington by fall, according to a statement made by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) in Politico. “I’m very optimistic that he’ll be back this fall,” Graham said in the Politico story. According to the Politico article, Kirk has turned his quarters at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago into a branch office communicating with colleagues, members of his staff and others to make his voice heard. He has been holding video sessions with his Washington aids. Illinois’s senior senator, Sen. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) is walking on a treadmill as he continues to make progress recovering from a stroke suffered Jan. 21, according to Dr. Richard L. Harvey, the physician treating the senator at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago Center for Stroke Rehabilitation. “Senator Kirk is adapting well to the rehabilitation program,” Harvey said. “This week he started walking exercises on a treadmill and is performing an increasing number of routine tasks independently. Doctor Upgrades Kirk to Good Condition

  Sen. Mark Kirk’s (R-Highland Park) condition was ungraded to good from fair today as he continues to recover from a stroke suffered Jan. 21, according to a statement from Dr. Richard Fessler, the neurosurgeon treating the senator at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “Senator Kirk is making good progress in his recovery,” Fessler said. “He has been upgraded to good condition and we anticipate he will be able to start the rehabilitation phase soon. We are very pleased with his continued improvement.” Kirk watched the Super Bowl Sunday as he continues to visit with family and friends.
