May has been designated as "Look at Local History Month," and what better way to learn about McHenry County history than visiting the Powers-Walker House in Glacial Park? The McHenry County Conservation District has planned a Living History event from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the Powers-Walker home. The Greek revival house, circa 1854, is located at Glacial Park, a 3,382-acre conservation area located at Route 31 & Harts Road, Ringwood MCCD will feature a “Restoration Showcase” of the house, its donated artifacts and information about the local families who donated the items. With the arrival of warmer weather, the McHenry County Conservation District reminds residents several parts of the Prairie Trail Bike Path are closed due to multiple construction projects in Algonquin. The Prairie Trail has no through traffic from Route 31 (Main Street) in Algonquin to just south of Pyott Road in Lake in the Hills. Closed through May 24, Algonquin ByPass Construction: Section from Huntington Road to Algonquin Road. Closed through July 30, Delayed Bridge Repair: On the North – Trail exits at subdivision westbound on Willow. On the South – Trail Ends at Route 31 Huntington. Meyer Road parking lot is closed. Enjoy an afternoon of outdoor exploration and artistic activities at "A Celebration of Wildflower and Art," from 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Coral Woods Conservation Area. This annual event is hosted by the McHenry County Conservation District at Coral Woods, located at 7400 Somerset, Marengo. During this afternoon outing, participants can hike the woodlands and witness local plein air artists (painting “in the open air”) along the trails capturing the fleeting beauty of the native spring wildflowers, according to a MCCD press release. McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren credits two good Samaritans for pulling woman from car.
Two good Samaritans are credited with pulling a Harvard woman from her burning car early Wednesday morning after she collided with a school bus on Route 14. Deborah Furstenau, 53, was driving a 1997 Plymouth eastbound on Route 14 in unincorporated Hartland Township at about 7 a.m. April 10, when she lost control of the car, veered into the westbound lane and collided with a Durham School Bus, according to McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren. Sheriff's police were called to the 16200 block of Route 14. While enroute to the crash scene deputies learned Furstenau's car had caught fire. The McHenry County Conservation District will be hosting a candlelight cross-country ski event Friday and Saturday night at the Marengo Ridge Conservation Area. The .5-mile trail at Marengo Ridge Conservation Area, which is located on Route 23 just north of River Road in Marengo, will be open and lit by candlelight from 5 to 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, according to a MCCD press release. Attendees should bring their own skis and the event is free to the public. There will be hot chocolate and a campfire available after the cross-country ski event. There's no better way to beat cabin fever than to grab your coat, boots and adventurous spirit and march into the great outdoors. Not all animals sleep through winter. Many are busy searching for food, shelter and mates. The Chicagoland Green Burial Society is presenting a class about green burials at the Prairieview Education Center in Crystal Lake on Tuesday, July 31.
The Chicagoland Green Burial Society is presenting "Green Burials: Your Options, Your Wishes, Your Rights" to teach of the benefits of having a more conservation-friendly burial. A green burial simply means, "Not being embalmed, being buried in the ground without a vault, in a bio-degradable container, having as low an impact on the environment as possible," according to the Chicagoland Green Burial Society. The topics discussed at the presentation will range from what is done with the body to how the funeral service is handled to the resources needed, and everything in between.
