LITH Airport Hosts Young Eagles Rally

Rally scheduled for Saturday, May 25.

  Children can get a thrill with free airplane rides at the EAA Chapter 790’s first Young Eagles Rally of the year. The rally will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, May 25 at the Lake in the Hills Airport, 8407 Pyott Road, Lake in the Hills. Free rides are available to children age 8 to 17. A parent or guardian must accompany their child to the rally and sign the required waiver. For more information, visit the EAA Chapter 790’s website.

Lake in the Hills Searching for New Deputy Public Works Director

LITH's deputy public works director Manny Gomez, who also served as the village's airport manager, resigned last month.

  Lake in the Hills is once again in need of a deputy public works director/ airport manager, the First Electric Newspaper reports. Former deputy public works director Manny Gomez resigned last month, and took a job in the private sector, FEN reports. Gomez is the third person in recent years to leave the position, which also includes duties as the LITH airport manager. Gomez had replaced T.J. Moore, who left the LITH job in 2011 to accept the position of public works director for DeKalb. Prior, Dave Gregoria retired in 2009 and moved to Florida, the FEN reports. In the meantime, LITH public works director Fred Mullard is supervising the airport.

Lake in the Hills Again Offers Incentive Program to Draw Airport Tenants

The incentive program began Friday and will continue through Aug. 31, according to the Northwest Herald.

The village of Lake in the Hills is once again trying to attract tenants to the Lake in the Hils Airport.  The village of Lake in the Hills will offer a "finder's fee" to a current airport tenant of $294.80 if the new tenant they refer enters a one-year lease, according to a memo in the Lake in the Hills Village Board packet. The cost to rent a T-hangar at the airport is $294.80 per month.  In return, the new tenant will receive three months of free rent, according to the memo. The incentive program began March 1 and will run through Aug. 31, according to the Northwest Herald.  The village would bring in $1,664.80 in revenue over the year if it filled one empty hangar, according to the memo. LITH OKs Using Airport Hangars as Storage Units

The village of Lake in the Hills will allow rental of the hangars to store vehicles, furniture, appliances and other items.

With the hopes of upping revenue at the Lake in the Hills Airport, the village will now be leasing out its T-hangars—which have been used to store airplanes—as storage units. The Lake in the Hills Board approved a motion Thursday to lease the hangars as storage space for non-aeronautical items, such as vehicles, furniture, boats, appliances and other items.  The rental rates for the space, according to the village board memo, are lower than area storage units:  The Illinois Department of Transportation requests that aircraft leases take priority over non-aeronautical storage, according to the memo. If only they can do the same here for self storage in Sydney. I know of a few hangers that could be used this way and I’m sure it could benefit everyone if the storage space is cheap. It would also be a good idea to rent our disused factory floors and warehouses for self storage. I mean they may as well be used for such facilities rather than let them sit around rotting away. Study: LITH Airport Draws $28.7 Million to Local Economy

Results from a study by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

A recent study released by Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) through its Division of Aeronautics found the Lake in the Hills Airport drew $28.7 million in revenue to the local economy, according to a village of Lake in the Hills press release. A similar study in March 2000 by the Illinois Division of Transportation found the airport had a total economic impact of $19.2 million.  The Lake in the Hills Airport is designated by the Federal Aviation Administration as a reliever to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, according to the news release. And it is the only public airport in McHenry County. The village of Lake in the Hills hopes to draw in more tenants and boost revenue brought in by the airport.

The Village Board OK'd lowering T-hangar rental rates at the Lake in the Hills Airport at a meeting on June 12.  Village of Lake in the Hills staff recently proposed lowering the T-hangar rental rates from $378.59 to $290 with the hopes of filling vacant hangar spaces and boosting revenue brought in by the airport, according to village documents.  Prior to the vote, there were 20 T-hangars for lease at the airport and 11 were vacant, according to village documents.  The village recently adopted an incentive plan with hopes of drawing in tenants. The Village Board is poised to vote tonight on lowering T-hangar rental rates with hopes of filling vacancies at Lake in the Hills Airport. UPDATE: Men Killed in Fatal Plane Crash Identified

Crystal Lake Police have confirmed that two people were killed in a plane crash near the Lake in the Hills Airport Thursday.

Two people were killed Thursday in a plane crash near the Lake in the Hills Airport, Crystal Lake police said. The Northwest Herald reports Hugh Scott Clark, 65, of Lake Forest, and Paul San Filippo, 82, of Grayslake, died in the accident and "were in the front seats of the plane when it crashed." The plane went down at 3:15 p.m. in a marshy gravel pit on the east side of Pyott Road, across the street from the airport, Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Gene Lowery said. McHenry County deputy coroner Curt Bradshaw told the Northwest Herald the investigators are still working to determine who was piloting the plane.
