Swine barn renovated and dedicated to the memory of three Huntley area teens.
The Swine Memorial Barn is now the envy of the McHenry County Fairgrounds, standing as a memorial to three young Huntley 4-H Club members, Jennifer Kearns, Kevin Ziller and Grant Fruin. "Some of the kids who show their animals in other counties have told us this is the nicest barn they've seen," Carol Fruin said. "They say it's even nicer than the barns at the Illinois State Fair." The memorial barn project began in April after the Kearns, Ziller and Fruin families, who all live near each other in rural Huntley, began discussing how to spend the memorials each family received in honor of the three. All three families were active in the a 4-H group. Jennifer and Grant were members of the Huntley Pioneers and Kevin was a member of the …

Dedication for memorial barn honoring Grant Fruin, Kevin Ziller and Jennifer Kearns is planned at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1 at the McHenry County Fairgrounds, 11900 Country Club Road in Woodstock.
Grant Fruin, Kevin Ziller and Jennifer Kearns were 4-H kids from rural Huntley who spent every summer at the McHenry County Fair. The three childhood friends grew up going back and forth from their families’ farms and were active in the Huntley Pioneer 4-H Club. Each one met with a tragic death. Fifteen-year-old Grant died suddenly in August 2009. Kevin, 21, died in a car accident in July 2010. Earlier this year, Jennifer died in a car accident. She was 19 years old. The close-knit Ziller, Fruin and Kearns families each suffered the loss of a child but turned to each other and the community to memorialize their “little angels.” The families are ready to unveil the renovated livestock barns at the McHenry County Fairgrounds on the first …

Huntley teen was killed in a February car accident.
A Crystal Lake business, and the community, is helping the family who lost a loved one earlier this year. Nick's Pizza & Pub is donating all proceeds today (Thursday, March 22) to the family of Jennifer Kearns, a Huntley teen who died in a car accident in February. Kearns worked at Nick’s through high school and during her breaks from college, where she was studying to be a dental hygienist. Kearns was a passenger in a 1995 Jeep Cherokee driven by Zachary C. Richardson, 22, of Union, when it went off the roadway on Marengo Road in Coral Township. Kearns and Richardson were ejected from the vehicle. Kearns was pronounced dead at the scene. “Jennifer was a rock star kitchen team member, we will always be grateful to have had her as a par of …

Jennifer Kearns touched many lives in her 19 years. The Huntley woman, who died last week, will be laid to rest Wednesday.
His name was Ben. I can’t remember his last name without digging through a yearbook packed away in some box somewhere. He died in a car accident the summer after graduation. This summer will be 25 years ago that he died. I didn’t know him well, but I remember him as a nice guy. I also remember what he looked like and how he was a friendly, popular, smart 18-year-old with a bright future. Jennifer Kearns’s former classmates will remember her too, years from now. The 19-year-old will be remembered as a friendly, kind girl with a bright smile. She will be remembered as forever young, even as they age and their memories blur. Death is never easy to understand but wrapping our minds around the death of someone so young is often …

She was a very nice girl indeed, the ceremony at the church had a 3 hour long line. Every second was worth staying to give that last goodbye. Jen was one of the sweetest girls you could ever talk to.   more ›
