Huntley Baseball Coach Steps Down After DUI Arrest

Andy Jakubowski suspended himself from coaching for the rest of the regular season, according to McHenryCountySports.com.

Huntley baseball coach Andy Jakubowski has suspended himself from coaching for the rest of the regular season after being arrested for driving under the influence and speeding early Sunday morning, according to McHenryCountySports.com.  Jakubowski said he spent practice with his team on Monday and Tuesday before breaking the news to them on Wednesday about his decision not to coach, telling McHenryCountySports.com that "it was the hardest thing" he'd ever had to do.  Read more on McHenryCountySports.com.

Area Girls Track Athletes Qualify for State

Huntley High School placed third overall at the sectional meet in Belvidere last week while Jacobs placed fourth overall.

Help Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Patch get to 1,500 "likes" on Facebook Several local girls track and field athletes will be headed to the state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston this Thursday through Saturday.  The Jacobs High School girls track team placed fourth overall at the Belvidere (North) girls sectional track and field meet on May 9 with 43 points. Huntley High Embraces 'Blended Learning'

A 2011 survey by Babson Survey Research Group found that nearly 23 percent of students in Illinois took blended learning classes, according to the Northwest Herald.

"Blended learning," a combination of online learning with traditional classroom instruction, is taking hold at Huntley High School with 500 of the high school's 2,393 students enrolled in the program this year and 1,300 students expected to enroll next year, according to the Northwest Herald.  The blended learning classes were offered for the first time this year and allow students to complete online assignments while attending 47-minute classes at least two times per week, according to the Northwest Herald.  Read more on this story on the Northwest Herald.

Huntley High to Begin Construction on Football Field

The construction project is expected to get underway in early June, according to the Northwest Herald.

As part of the first project in an extensive expansion, construction will soon start on the Huntley High School's football stadium, according to the Northwest Herald. The District 158 Board of Education last week approved $1.4 million in construction bids for work, such as, "excavation of the football field and installation of drainage equipment" in preparation for the addition of a new synthetic field, according to the article.

Huntley High Senior Named Illinois Journalist of the Year

Marek Makowski will travel to the Journalism Education Association spring conference in San Francisco on April 27.

Huntley High School senior Marek Makowski has been named Illinois Journalist of the Year by the Illinois Journalism Education Association (IJEA). On April 27, he will travel to San Francisco with journalism adviser Dennis Brown for the Journalism Education Association spring conference where he will be in the running for National Journalist of the Year. “I couldn’t believe it when Mr. Brown told me the great news,” said Makowski. For the competition, Makowski submitted a 38-page portfolio, which was the culmination of three years of his dedication to writing. 'Festival of Music' Concert Tonight; Benefits Huntley High School Band Program

The 6th Annual concert Tuesday night features Huntley High School Band and Sun City Concert Band at the Performing Arts Center at the school.

  Huntley High School band director Nick Konwerski and Sun City Concert Band director Donna Bressler are pleased to announce the “Festival of Music” concert. The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the Performing Arts Center at Huntley High School, 13719 Harmony Road, Huntley. This 6th annual concert will feature a variety of new musical selections not previously performed by the combined bands. The event is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted at the door to benefit the Huntley High School band program. Donations from last year’s event totaled $1,079 to which the Sun City Band added another $1,000 for a grand total of $2,079.
