Downtown Crystal Lake creates festively artistic displays to raise money for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign.
The Downtown Crystal Lake businesses are helping raise a little more "dough" for the 2012 Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. Participating downtown merchants have created gingerbread displays as part of a friendly competition to raise money for the Salvation Army of McHenry County, headquartered at 290 W. Crystal Lake Ave., Crystal Lake. The concept is simple: If customers like a store's gingerbread display, they can "vote" for their favorite - or favorites - by dropping a donation into the smaller red kettles hanging either next to the display, or by the store cash register. The Kiwanis Club expected a good crowd for Sunday's 5K - having had 500 people pre-register. But, by race day, another 201 participants had joined the fun.
Balmy weather and the promise of a jolly good time lured 701 participants from their beds early Sunday morning to the "Santa Run, Reindeer Dash for Kids." This first-time-ever event was hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Crystal Lake as a way to raise money for McHenry County organizations serving children. Runners, walkers, participants pushing strollers and some tagging along dogs gathered at the Raue Center for the Arts where the race kicked off at 9 a.m. The giant crowd of Santa Clauses weaved its way through the streets of downtown Crystal Lake. Temperatures were so warm some Santas converted their red pants into cutoff shorts, others opted to skip wearing the Santa suit, and many beards were seen flying along the course. By all …

Friday evening parade will feature about 50 lighted floats and parade entries in historic downtown Crystal Lake. Oh, ho, ho....Santa will be there, too!
The annual Festival of Lights Parade kicks off the holiday season on Friday - and welcomes good old Santa Clause himself - to Crystal Lake. Grab the kids, grandma and grandpa, too, and make your way to historic downtown Crystal Lake to watch a colorful, illuminated holiday parade filled with more than 50 decorated floats. The parade starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23. Scarecrows, apples and pies, oh my! Only one day remaining until the 20th Annual Johnny Appleseed Festival in Downtown Crystal Lake. This year's event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29. Crystal Lake's largest one-day event invites families and the community to celebrate Fall. Activities for the day include live music, entertainment, pony rides, petting zoo, pumpkin train, pumpkin bowling, clowns, face painting, story telling, temporary tattoos, wagon rides, Farmers Market, and more. Crystal Lake police are looking for more information about the attack that occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Monday.
The Crystal Lake Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding an aggravated battery incident that occurred June 6 to contact them. According to police, a 38-year-old woman was attacked in an alleyway on the east side of N. Williams Street between Woodstock and Brink’s streets shortly after 4 p.m. The woman was walking alone in the alley when she was approached by a white male who had his hand in his pocket and implied he had a firearm that he would use to harm her if she didn’t do as he said or tried to call for help. The offender grabbed the victim and tried to lead her to a more secluded location in the alley, striking her twice in the face. After a brief struggle, the victim broke free and fled.
