Area school districts are cancelling after-school activities and some businesses are closing early as heavy snow blankets McHenry County this afternoon. A winter storm advisory is in effect for McHenry County through 9 p.m. tonight. Below is a list of closings and cancellations for the area as of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26. District 300 will have a snow day Friday. District 300 Superintendent Michael Bregy sent out the following message to district famililes Thursday evening: "Good evening. This is Dr. Michael Bregy, Superintendent of School District 300, calling with an important message. Due to the inclement weather, District 300 schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday, February 22. Each principal will send a separate message before 12 noon tomorrow telling parents whether or not tomorrow’s after-school practices, performances, and competitions will be held as planned. Brett Kincannon is known to everyone at Neubert Elementary School as 'Mr. Brett' and is known for always taking the time to connect with students.
Everyone at Neubert Elementary just calls him Mr. Brett. “He’s very personable, loyal and friendly,” teacher Julie Voss said. “He’s a hard worker and he’s always there to help anyone.” Brett Kincannon has been part of District 300’s custodial department for 35 years and is retiring from Neubert, where he has made an impact on students and teachers everyday. What has impressed Voss and fellow teacher Katie Zweidinger is Kincannon’s ability to connect with autistic students. Voss teaches kindergarten to second grade in Neubert’s autism classes. Zweidinger is another teacher in grades 4, 5 and 6. “If he is working in our room or working in the hallway, he stops to talk to them. He remembers them by name. In Illinois, over 200,000 children under the age of 18 years old are living in a grandparent-headed home.
District 300 recently launched a new support program meant to assist grandparents who are raising grandchildren in the district. A district committee is being formed to help senior citizens connect and provide them with valuable resources to help them raise their grandchildren, according to a District 300 press release. In Illinois, over 200,000 children under the age of 18 years old are living in a grandparent-headed home. More than 100,000 grandparents are caring for their grandchildren. "D300 recognizes and would like to assist those grandparents who are actively parenting students in our schools," according to the news release. Their mutual passion for teaching literacy to children made for a memorable cross-country trip. “Barb and I would insist on stopping at every dollar store and Cracker Barrel gift shop that we saw to look for toys, games, novelties, or whatever treasures we thought might enhance the ‘learning to read’ experience,” Spiro said. “And our husbands had a good time making fun of some of our choices.” Those choices tend to be a big hit with Malinger’s students. The Illinois State Board of Health recently approved the new requirements. So far this year, 30 cases of whooping cough have been reported in McHenry County while 299 cases were reported in 2012.
High school students will need to get a whooping cough vaccine next school year under new requirements recently approved by the Illinois State Board of Health. All sixth through twelfth grade students will be required to receive one booster shot of Tdap, which is an immunization against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) for the 2013-14 school year, according to the McHenry County Department of Health press release. Some good news for District 300 parents — the district is proposing to keep student fees flat next year, according to a Northwest Herald article. The District 300 School Board is expected to vote on the 2013-14 fee schedule at a Jan. 28 board meeting, according to the Daily Herald. Fees within District 300 are above average compared to neighboring school districts, including Huntley District 158, according to the NW Herald article. LEAD 300, the district's teacher's union, voted Wednesday to ratify the contract, said Michael Williamson, spokesman for LEAD 300, in an e-mail Wednesday.
