The District 300 Board of Education will meet on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
The District 300 Board of Education will vote to deny a proposal from an online charter school during Monday's meeting, according to the school board agenda. Illinois Virtual Learning Solutions, an offshoot of K12 Inc., which is based in Virginia and manages online learning schools in 27 states, proposed the charter school, which was meant to service under served students in 18 area school districts, including District 300, according to the Northwest Herald. The company has drawn criticism for its for-profit status while seeing low student achievement and high turnover rates of its teachers, according to the New York Times. LEAD 300 and District 300 could not reach an agreement Monday, strike set for Tuesday.
UPDATED 5:20 P.M., DEC. 3: LEAD 300 announces plan to strike after union and District 300 officials can't agree on terms of a new contract. Union members will be on strike Tuesday morning. District 300 and the teachers’ union, LEAD 300, were close to an agreement Thursday but remain at odds over class size, according to the Northwest Herald. No deal has been reached and the union is meeting on Sunday. The board and the union are scheduled to have another meeting on Monday, Dec. 3 and if no agreement is reached, teachers could go on strike by Tuesday, Dec. 4.
