STATE CHAMPIONS!

Prairie Ridge tops Peoria-Richwoods to take the 6A title.

For the first time in school history, the Prairie Ridge Wolves are state champions. The Wolves beat Peoria-Richwoods 35-14 in another display of power and balance. With both teams struggling to score through the first two quarters the game started to open up for the Wolves in the second half. Tied 7-7 with 7:12 left in the third quarter, the Wolves found a weakness on the Knights line. Prairie Ridge started to run left when Jordan Getzelman ran in from the 10-yard line to put the Wolves up 14-7. Less than 90 seconds later, Wolves defensive end Erik Odden scooped up a fumble by Richwoods quarterback Jeremye Johnson and ran it into the end zone. The Knights got back into it after Clayton Glasper hauled in 59-yard reception at the Prairie …

Gutsy Gators Can't Overcome Slow Start

Crystal Lake South played Rockford Boylan even in the second half, but an explosive first half by the Titans was the difference in the game.

Crystal Lake South went three and out with the opening kickoff. On the Titan’s first play they hit a 50-yard pass to DeMarcus Vines that put the ball on the 4-yard line. Two plays later, Rockford Boylan put it in the end zone and never looked back in their way to a 30-13 victory. Pinned deep in their own territory, the Gators were victimized by the first of three interceptions that gave the Titans the ball on the 3-yard line from where they scored their second touchdown in less than a minute. With 5:18 left in the first quarter Rockford kicked a 25-yard field goal and led the stunned Gators, 17-0. "We had to keep them from getting big plays and stop them from running the ball and we didn’t," said South coach Chuck Ahsmann. "They’re a very …

Gators Make History, Beat Carmel 14-9

The Gator class of 2012 now holds the record for the most varsity wins in Crystal Lake South history with 21.

Coach Chuck Ahsmann wanted to make a point after his Crystal Lake South team beat Carmel 14-9 Friday night. "We don’t have 1 superstar on this team. We won this game tonight because we have 75 superstars!" he said to his team as loud cheers erupted from the players. "Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Listen up! Tomorrow, film at 9 a.m.!" The coach smiled widely, knowing the players would be eager to see how they did. "Your coaches will be at Rockford for the 1 p.m. game tomorrow and we hope to see some of you there," he said as more cheers and yelling erupted from the players. Both teams were very talented and ran behind massive lines as their primary weapon of offense. The only question was who was going to have the better defense that stops the other…

Playoff Time for Crystal Lake Football

Our breakdown of the start of the second season.

The only Crystal Lake team that looked, for only a short time, that they might not make the playoffs was Crystal Lake Central, but the Tigers finished strong to join South and Prairie Ridge in the second season. Now it's time for the playoffs! Here's our first round breakdown: 6A No. 15 Marmion (5-4) @ No. 2 Prairie Ridge (8-1) — 1 p.m. Saturday The only questions surrounding the Wolves was whether they'd go undefeated and how far could their balanced attack take them. One of those questions was answered last Friday when Cary-Grove went for two in overtime to knock the Wolves from the unbeaten. Although the loss slipped Prairie Ridge to a two seed, it might have given the Wolves a wake-up call after they rolled through the season. Other …

Wolves Look for Perfection, South to Get Tested

Crystal Lake teams get one final game before the playoffs start.

Cary-Grove (6-2) @ Prairie Ridge (8-0) Our featured game of the week! Look for our extensive photo gallery Monday morning. The Wolves are one win away from a perfect regular season but standing in the way are the Trojans. Cary-Grove has allowed less than 10 points a game this season and their passing attack is lead by star quarterback Quinn Baker. The Wolves have beaten everyone by at least three touchdowns and don't want to get tripped up before the playoffs begin next week. Grayslake Central (7-1) @ Crystal Lake South (7-1) The Gators get a big test to finish off the regular season when the Rams come to town Friday night. The tough South defense will have its hands full when Grayslake Central running back Joey Valdivia hits the field. …
