CL South Student Simultaneously Earns High School and College Associate Degrees

Laura Arboleda will earn an associate degree from McHenry County College two weeks before she graduates from Crystal Lake South High School.

Crystal Lake South High School student Laura Arboleda will graduate this May with her high school diploma and an associate degree from McHenry County College. In fact, she will receive her MCC degree two weeks before her high school graduation. She plans to transfer in the fall to University of Florida, Gainesville, to pursue a bachelor’s degree in architecture. Arboleda wanted to get a jump-start on college and save money on tuition, so she enrolled in the Running Start program at MCC in summer 2010, where she started earning credit for college while still attending high school. “I realized that taking classes ahead of time would save me a considerable amount of money and I would accomplish my educational and career goals faster,” …

PHOTOS: CL South vs. CL Central Football Game Draws Enthusiastic Fans

It was standing-room only Friday night as the CLS Gators welcomed cross-town rivals, the CL Tigers to their field.

The weather was warm, the moon was full (although partly hidden behind the clouds), and the stands were packed with fans eager for a good Friday night football game. The evening began with the sophomore squads from Crystal Lake South and Crystal Lake Central competing. The match was somewhat close, but the South Gators won by a score of 14-7. Then, the big boys took to the Ken Bruhn Field. Both teams had hundreds of fans, many painted green or orange from head to toe. Some onlookers were armed with horns, and others made noise the old-fashioned way- screaming and cheering. The Crystal Lake South marching band, color guard and poms gave a great performance, even playing the Tigers school song in a good-will gesture to their cross-town …

CL South Service Learning Program Links Students With Real World

Students and teachers organized and carried out 72 separate service learning projects during the 2011-2012 school year.

Crystal Lake South High School students were very busy this past year, not just with their studies, but also working on their required Service Learning project. For the past three years, South administrators, teachers and students have been testing out the Service Learning program, which was designed to make connections between what the students are learning in class and the real world, South Principal Marsha Potthoff said. "This is the year when we have to review the program, and we determined we're going to keep it," Potthoff said. "The teachers felt the program was now embedded in the curriculum...the vast majority felt it was helping their students, they felt they were making a connection to their students, and felt the students were …
