Crystal Lake Police Issue 73 Citations in 'Cinco de Mayo' Crackdown

"Drive to Survive" safety campaign focused on Cinco de Mayo holiday.

  The Crystal Lake Police Department stopped 58 motorists and issued 73 traffic citations during its "Cinco de Mayo- Drive to Survive" traffic safety campaign. The crackdown stemmed from Crystal Lake's participation in the Illinois Department of Transportation's Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program, said Crystal Lake Cmdr. Dan Dziewior. Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois particpated in the statewide effort from May 1 to 5, to "save lives by encouraging motorists to refrain from drinking and driving and to buckle up during the late-night hours," Dziewior said. Crystal Lake Man, 23, in Critical Condition after Dirt Bike Accident

Kyle R. Pratt was injured Saturday afternoon while riding a Motocross near Nunda Trail and Terra Cotta Road just outside Crystal Lake city limits.

A Crystal Lake man is listed in critical condition after he lost control of his dirt bike late Saturday afternoon and crashed on ComEd property in unincorporated Crystal Lake. Kyle R. Pratt, 23, 995 Whitehall Way, was transported from the scene and initially taken to Centegra Hospital in McHenry. From there, he was flown via medical helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he is listed in critical condition, according to McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren. Pratt was riding a 2002 Suzuki RM Motocross at about 5:21 p.m. Saturday, April 13. Dirt Biker Airlifted after Crash in Crystal Lake

Biker was transported by helicopter for treatment, police said.

A dirt bike rider in need of immediate medical care was airlifted on Saturday evening by helicopter, according to area police and dispatch alerts. An emergency alert issued at 6:25 p.m. stated a "motorcycle had collided with a fence" near Nunda Trail and Terra Cotta Road, just outside the Crystal Lake city limits. Crystal Lake Police assisted McHenry County Sheriff's officers with road closures in the area to allow for the helicopter transport. Crystal Lake Police had no further information about the accident, or the condition of the victim, since the accident occured within the county's jurisdiction. Evanston Police: Man Duct-Taped Couple, Stole Paintings Stolen paintings found in a Morton Grove consignment shop led Evanston detectives to arrest and charge a Glenview man in connection with a home invasion that took place in Evanston in April 2012.  Michael Karabatsis, 51, of the 600 block of Pfingsten Road in Glenview, was arrested and charged with home invasion, a felony, on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  Police believe Karabatsis was one of three men who knocked on the door of a home in the 2200 block of Central Street on Friday, April 13, claiming they had a delivery. Highland Park 5-Year-Old Killed After Woman Drives Onto Sidewalk, Hits Family A five-year-old girl was killed after an 18-year-old woman drove her Lexus Coupe onto a sidewalk and into a family on Labor Day. The driver in the Highland Park crash in the 700 block of Central Avenue which left Jaclyn Santos-Sacramento, 5, of Highland Park, dead was charged Wednesday with driving under the influence “of an intoxicating compound or combination of intoxicating compounds,” according to a news release from Highland Park City Manager David Knapp. Carly Rousso, 18, of Highland Park was charged based on the evidence obtained and analyzed so far with any additional counts based on a further investigation, according to the release. Joliet Drew Peterson Case Likely To End This Week Testimony in the Drew Peterson murder trial concluded Thursday and closing arguements are set for Tuesday, Sept. 4. Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police officer, is charged with murdering his his third wife Kathleen Savio. Savio was found dead in a bathtub in March 2004 and her death initially was ruled an accident. Peterson was charged in Savio's death in May 2009. CL: Man Charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder in Battery Incident

Steven K. Henshall, 44, of McHenry, is currently being held in the McHenry County Jail in Woodstock.

  Crystal Lake Police arrested a McHenry man after an alleged battery incident between him and a woman he had briefly dated. Steven K. Henshall, 44, last known address of McHenry, was charged with the following offenses after Crystal Lake Police reviewed the facts of the case with the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office:  Crystal Lake Police Commander Derek Hyrkas stated in a press release that officers were called to the 800 block of Virginia Road in Crystal Lake at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, to a report of a battery in progress between a man and woman. Park Ridge Man Charged With Assaulting Teen Who Was Walking Home A Park Ridge resident attacked and ripped the shorts off a 16-year-old girl on Aug. 15 around 5 p.m., Park Ridge police stated. Anthony M. Nugent, 37, of Park Ridge, was charged with one count of aggravated battery, a class 3 felony. Nugent was also charged with misdemeanor possession of cannabis. According to police, the victim was walking in the 900 block of Home Avenue. At that time, Nugent allegedly asked the girl what she was carrying. CL City Council Tables Vote on Changing 'Possession of Marijuana' Ordinance

After a lengthy discussion Tuesday night, city leaders directed Crystal Lake Police Chief David Linder to investigate changing provisions in the proposed amendment.

  Emotions ran high Tuesday night as city leaders and members of the public discussed a proposed amendment allowing Crystal Lake police officers to issue tickets to offenders caught with less than 30 grams of marijuana. The citation would replace a misdemeanor arrest, which some city leaders said would send the wrong signal to would-be marijuana users.
