The Tribune story attributes the growth to an increase in acceptance of gay and lesbian couples, as evidenced by laws allowing civil unions, as well as the portrayal of gay characters in movies and television. It's a day many thought would never come.
Mark Rogalski and Michael Strei waited for hours outside the McHenry County Clerk’s office Wednesday to be the first same-sex couple to get a civil union license in the county. The Lake in the Hills couple waited 30 years for the day to legalize their union. “I didn’t think this would happen,” Rogalski said. Cynthia Thompson and Angela Gaspari, of Crystal Lake, were second in line Wednesday as a new state of Illinois law legalized civil unions. They had the “big church wedding with attendants and big white dresses,” Gaspari said. But the civil union license sealed the deal. “It’s surreal,” Gaspari said after signing the license and posing with Thompson. “It’s something you’ve been waiting for so long. I can’t believe it actually happened…

At the stroke of midnight, his California marriage to Rich Jacobs will be recognized in Illinois as a civil union. Illinois’ civil union law took effect today, giving gay families the legal same rights as heterosexual families in the state. It becomes one of a dozen states extending significant legal protection to same-sex couples, according a Huffington Post story. “It’s about time,” said Dalton, of the civil union legislation. Dalton is Kane County’s first openly gay man to be elected to office. He won a seat on the Elgin Community College board in the spring. Illinois couples are now able to obtain licenses to form a civil union. Starting today, same-sex and heterosexual couples will be able to register for a civil union license at courthouses throughout the state. The couples will have to wait until the next day to have a civil union ceremony performed, according to the McHenry County Court website. According to the Associated Press, the civil union, "a rough equivalent to marriage" will allow couples to "decide medical treatment for an ailing partner and the right to inherit a partner's property."
