MAP: Flooded Roads Throughout Chicago Area

From interstates to local roads, our map provides updates on closures and high-standing water in your area.

From the Wisconsin border to the south side of Chicago and into the western suburbs, local roads, interstates and highways were closed Thursday because of flooding.  Click through the pins above to see which roads in your area — or on your route to and from work today — have been closed due to flooding or have high-standing water. Police are encouraging drivers to avoid roadways with standing water.  If you come upon an area with high-standing water or that is closed, add that information to our map by visiting this link. Otherwise, let us know about the closure by commenting below.  Drivers are asked to beware of high-standing water on roadways. Poll: How to Curb Teen Heroin Use in the Suburbs?

The Illinois Crime Commission is proposing all first responders be given heroin overdose kits.

As fears over heroin use have diminished in recent years, the drug has become more potent, cheaper and no longer requires the user to inject it with a needle, according to the Chicago Tribune.  Access has also become easy for those living in the suburbs and has claimed many teenage lives. Heroin is readily available along a corridor know as "Heroin Highway" — at Interstates 290 and 88. Chicago gang members work with the Mexican cartels to get the drug, according to the Tribune.  To address this health concern, the Illinois Crime Commission proposed arming all first responders with heroin overdose rescue kits, which would contain a dose of Naloxone—an opiate overdose reversal drug—and a syringe, according to the Daily Herald.  They promoted…

Another Heat Wave on the Way

Highs are expected to reach 96 degrees July 16, with a heat index of around 100 degrees.

More extreme heat is on the way this week.  According to the National Weather Service, the forecast high for today, July 16, is 96 degrees, with a heat index of around 100 degrees. The forecast high for Tuesday is 98 degrees, with a heat index of 100 to 106 degrees. AIRNow says today's air quality is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups. "Active children and adults, and people with lung disease, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors," according to AIRNow. How do you plan to stay cool in the heat?

UPDATE: Area Communities Cancel Fireworks

Find out which communities in the Chicago suburbs are still planning fireworks displays in the coming days.

The Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday this year. That means you will have the chance to enjoy the festivities the weekend before, the weekend after and, of course, on July 4. Due to dry conditions, some area communities have decided to cancel or re-schedule their fireworks' shows.  We've got a list below of fireworks displays that have been cancelled as well as shows that are still scheduled in the Chicago suburbs. Survey: LITH Among Worst in Nation for Commute Times

Tell us by commenting below: How long is your commute? Why do you think Lake in the Hills residents, as well as other McHenry County communities, face some of the worst commute times in the nation?

Does it take you more than 30 minutes to get to your job each day?  You are not alone. Around 65 percent of Lake in the Hills residents spend more than 30 minutes commuting to work, with 43 percent of those commuters spending more than 45 minutes traveling to their jobs, according to statistics published in the Business Journals from an On Numbers study. The On Numbers study contained statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau 2009 American Community Survey. Lake in the Hills ranked among the worst for commute times for communities with a population between 10,000 and 50,000. The village ranked 2,980 among the 3,012 communities across the nation surveyed and third to last among Illinois communities.  The community with the best commute …

I'm in NW LITH and it can take me over 2 hours to go to office in Lincolnshire - a mere 30 miles straight east! Two major bottlenecks - across the river and through Long Grove - account for about 75% of that travel time during regular rush. I opted for second shift to avoid that traffic, although it still takes more than an hour at midday to go to the office.   more ›
