Cary's top cop is leaving for Buffalo Grove. Buffalo Grove has selected Cary Police Chief Steven Casstevens to replace its outgoing chief, according to Buffalo Grove Village Manager Dane Bragg. Casstevens has more than 30 years experience as a law enforcement and management professional. He will replace Steve Balinski, who retired as Buffalo Grove's chief in April after 36 years serving the village. Casstevens will assume his post in Buffalo Grove on June 10. Police on Wednesday will fire off blanks at Cary Grove High School to simulate a real-life lock down situation involving guns.

In an effort to familiarize teachers and students with the sounds of gunfire, Cary-Grove High School will conduct a lock-down drill on Wednesday where police officers plan to fire blanks in the hallway. Cary-Grove Principal Jay Sargeant explained in a letter to parents the drill is part of a districtwide effort to increase student safety. Sargeant asked parents to discuss the drill ahead of time to ease any possible emotional reactions from hearing the sounds. "The simulation will take approximately 15-20 minutes, during which time teachers will secure their rooms, draw curtains, and keep their students from traveling throughout the building," Sargeant said. Michael S. Reck, 38, was arrested Friday, Jan. 11, and charged with sexual offenses against five victims age 4 to 14, Cary Police said.
A Cary man has been arrested and accused of sexually assaulting five children, ages 4 to 14, according to the Cary Police Department. Michael S. Reck, 38, 10 Wulff St., Cary, has been charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault (a Class X felony), seven counts criminal sexual assault (Class 1 felony), and two counts aggravated criminal sexual abuse (Class 2 felony), according to a Cary Police Department press release. On Jan. 6, police were notified of alleged incidents between Reck and the five victims, and immediately began an investigation. Police have charged Cary resident Dustin M. Mancill, 23, with various offenses after he allegedly attempted to bring a hatchet into the McHenry County Courthouse in Woodstock on Thursday, the Northwest Herald reports. The charges against Mancill stemming from the Jan. 10 incident include two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer, three counts of resisting arrest, and one count of unlawful use of a weapon, the Herald reports. Cary resident Dustin M. Mancill, 23, was taken into custody Thursday, Jan. 10, after he entered the McHenry County Courthouse in Woodstock with a hatchet tucked inside the front of his pants, the Northwest Herald reports. At about 8:30 a.m., Mancill entered the courthouse and - per normal security standards - was asked by an officer to remove items from his pockets and take off his coat to be scanned by an X-ray machine, the Herald reports. Upon seeing the hatchet, a security officer grabbed it and pulled Mancill aside, at which time a scuffle ensued. Mancill was calm at times, and then became aggressive, the story states. Cary Day Care provider Alvin D. Santiago, 31, has been charged with one felony count of aggravated battery to a child, according to the Cary Police Department. Santiago, of the 300 block of Ann Street, was charged following a six-week investigation by the Cary Police Department and the Department of Children and Family Services. The case involves injuries against a three-month-old baby that occurred on Sept. 17, Cary Police said in a press release. Authorities were called to Santiago's home that day for a report of a baby who was unconscious and not breathing. Santiago was a home daycare provider and responsible for the child when the incident took police, police said. It was determined the baby suffered significant head trauma …

The Cary man indicted one year ago on charges of solicitation of murder for hire pleaded guilty Wednesday in McHenry County Court in Woodstock. Stanley Helmer, 59, 6105 Miller Ln., Cary, pleaded guilty to attempted solicitation of murder for hire in front of McHenry County Judge Joseph P. Condon, the Northwest Herald is reporting. While in court, Helmer also pleaded guilty to one count of solicitation of aggravated discharge of a firearm. Helmer now faces up to 15 years in prison, and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 16, for his sentencing, the story said.
