Area Boys Basketball Teams Ready for Regionals

The start of regional play begins this week.

Several area boys' basketball teams are gearing up for regional play for this next week. The Illinois High School Association announced the following pairings for regionals: Class 4A: Number three seed Crystal Lake South will take on McHenry during the third game of the Prairie Ridge Regional. The Gators and Warriors face off at 8:10 pm on Wednesday, March 2. Number two seed H.D. Jacobs will take on number three seed Dundee-Crown High School during the third game of the (Elgin) Larkin Regional. The teams face off on Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. Number one seed Huntley High School will take on the winner of game one during the second game of the Prairie Ridge Regional. Hinkle Brings Out Best in Jacobs' Players

The Patch Hardwood Tour examines boys high school basketball on a weekly rotational basis, focusing on teams in a 12-town region.

Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle seems to squeeze every bit of talent from the players on his Golden Eagles team. In my eyes, he has two seasoned guards, Nick Hofman and point-man Mike Peterson who are above average high school players, and has about seven other role players who fit the system and regularly get things done.     Saturday night against a taller, more talented Libertyville team, Jacobs demonstrated how they have managed to stay above .500 all season and challenge for the Fox Valley title (before finally falling short). Watching Jacobs choreograph its offense against Libertyville, I saw the best floor spacing and the highest number of precise back cuts I’ve seen in any game all year. Eight times the Golden Eagles burned Libertyville …

Huntley One Game Behind Jacobs in Conference Race

A round-up of games, including Barrington vs. Fremd.

Eleven weeks into the season it finally happened, thanks to a big game and a boost from the girls. I’m talking about the first full house for a hoops contest I’ve witnessed this campaign – the first-place Mid-Suburban League West showdown Friday between the Barrington Broncos and the host Fremd Vikings won by the visitors 75-61. In a rare pairing, the boys varsity game preceded the girls contest, meaning that the fairer of the species took center stage at prime time before a larger-than-usual audience. But, as I’ve already pointed out, the boys benefitted as well from the parents, friends and fans of the girls game, who lent their presence and vocal cords to the important contest, giving it the atmosphere it deserved. Athlete of the Week: Matt Ehrhardt

Ehrhardt was nominated for his "toughness" by Jacob's Athletic Director Tom Ross.

Matt Ehrhardt is a senior at Jacobs High School. He's a star defensive player on the varsity Golden Eagles who continued to play after a substantial injury this season. Algonquin Patch: What position do you play? Matt Ehrhardt: I play guard. Algonquin Patch:Point or shooting guard? Ehrhardt: Shooting guard. Algonquin Patch:How long have you been playing basketball?
