The holiday shopping season officially kicks off this Thanksgiving weekend. Are you ready? Some will hit the stores only hours after stuffing themselves with turkey on Thanksgiving night. While others will take the more traditional route and set their alarms for the early-morning Black Friday sales. There will also be deals to be had around town for Small Business Saturday — which is this Saturday and meant to highlight the many local businesses as an option for holiday shopping. And if you aren't all "shopped" out, Cyber Monday will kick of next week's work week. Whether nearby or a bit of drive, we have got the scoop on what suburban retailers will be offering for Black Friday deals. The Commons will be giving free gift cards — ranging in value from $10 to $500 — and holiday tote bags away to its first 1,000 shoppers that make it out to the commons on Black Friday morning, according to the Commons' website. Shoppers can also sign up to win a $2,500 shopping spree. Shopping hours vary by store at Algonquin Commons with several retailers starting the sales on Thanksgiving night. Thanksgiving has become the new Black Friday when it comes to Christmas shopping. Die-hard shoppers can barely button up their pants again after the feast before they need to be out the door and in line for at their favorite stores. Some stores are even opening their doors before the turkey is carved. This year, K-Mart in Crystal Lake will be open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The store will then take a break for turkey time, and open again at 8 p.m. for more shopping. Other area stores and malls will at least wait until after your family has time to give thanks for their blessings this year before they start selling. Just barely though. Thanksgiving weekend deals are no longer confined to the day after the holiday.
Thanksgiving remains the dividing line between a holiday almost devoid of commercialism and the biggest shopping season of the year. Although as the Washington Post noted, the start of the Christmas shopping season – "Black Friday" – has continued to be pushed forward. First stores opened at 5 a.m. And then earlier and earlier, until midnight became time for doors to open. The turkey isn't even fully digested before the shopping frenzy begins. As Patch noted, Walmart actually is starting its "Black Friday" sales on Thursday, opening stores at 8 p.m. That means people will have to scarf down dinner, shoo the relatives out the door and high tail it to Walmart to get a good spot in line.
