Dozens of area residents stopped out to Riverfront Park on Tuesday evening for a ceremony commemorating a new memorial. The memorial is meant to recognize area firefighters killed in the line of duty and all firefighters who died on 9/11.
Family members of two area firefighters killed in the line of duty expressed their appreciation Tuesday evening as the community came together to welcome a new 9/11 firefighters memorial to Riverfront Park in Algonquin. The memorial, which contains a 15-foot steal beam from the World Trade Center, was dedicated to Edwin LeRoy "Roy" Benson and Capt. G.D. "Mac" McIntyre—the only two firefighters in the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District's history to die in the line of duty. The memorial is also meant to recognize all firefighters who died on 9/11, said Kevin Rynders, fire chief for the Algonquin-LITH Fire Protection Disrtrict. A memorial recognizing two area firefighters killed in the line of duty officially will be unveiled on Sept. 11. The 9/11 firefighters memorial, which will be located at Riverfront Park, 501 Harrison St. in Algonquin, also is meant to recognize all of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The dedication ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday and is open to the public, according to an Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District press release. The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Association raised funds for the memorial and was able to secure a 15-foot section of the World Trade Center to be included as part of the memorial. A 16-year-old Batavia girl is the second person to come down with West Nile Virus in Kane County, health department officials said. The girl reported feeling ill last month but was not hospitalized, according a release from the Kane County Health Department. She has since recovered, officials said. A 64-year-old Elgin man died last month of West Nile Virus. This summer has been hot and dry which is the perfect combination for the Culex mosquito, the species known to carry the virus, according to the website. The Kane County health Department is monitoring WNV activating in the area and the country. The health department provides a map to show where traps are located throughout the county.
