Christina Loukas came up a bit short in her hopes to claim a medal in the finals of the three-meter springboard diving competition today at the Aquatics Center of the London Olympics. Loukas scored 332.10 to finish eighth in the world. It is the same position the Riverwoods’ native and Deerfield High School graduate had 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers is golden again and he had company, Michael Phelps. Grevers, who won an Olympic gold medal Monday in 100-meter backstroke, doubled his collection Saturday at Aquatics Center of the London Olympics. Earlier: Grevers Claims Olympic Gold, Record Swimming backstroke, Grevers did the opening backstroke leg of the men’s’ 4 x 100 medley relay. The American team, which had never lost this event, did not disappoint, coming home in a time of 3:29.35. The Americans easily outdistanced Japan, who was second in 3:31.26 in the final swimming event of the London Olympic Games. Christina Loukas is headed back to the Olympic diving finals. Loukas, who hails from Riverwoods and graduated from Deerfield High School, came up with an impressive performance Saturday in the women’s’ three meter springboard diving at the London Olympics. Earlier: Loukas Advances to Olympic Diving Semifinals Loukas scored a 339.75 in the semifinals to finish 6th and easily place in the top 12 scores that advanced to the finals. Loukas’ score on Saturday was nearly 10 points and one place higher than her preliminary score of 330.45 on Friday. Neither score carries over into the finals. Lake Forest High School graduate finishes 18th among 40 competitors in Olympic pole vault.
Lake Forest’s Jillian Schwartz failed in her attempt to qualify for the finals of the pole vault at the London Olympics Saturday. Schwartz, who was competing for the Israeli team thanks to her dual citizenship, missed three times at the 4.50 meter mark and was eliminated. She finished 18th overall of the 40 competitors but needed to be in the top 12 to advance to Sunday’s finals. Deerfield High School alumna moves into Saturday's competition.
Christina Loukas dove into the semifinals of the three-meter Olympic springboard competition Friday at the Aquatics Center at the London Games. Loukas got off to strong start and finished with a score of 330.45 to finish in seventh of the 30 divers in the preliminary round. That easily put her in the top 18 divers who advanced to Saturday’s semifinals at 8:30 a.m. Chicago time or 2:30 p.m. in London. Should Loukas score in the top 12 on Saturday, she would take part in Sunday’s finals. Lake Forest's Matt Grevers wins 100-meter backstroke in Olympic record time.
Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers is golden. Grevers, who grew up and began his swimming career in Lake Forest, came away with the city’s first individual Olympic gold medal when he won the 100-meter backstroke today at the London Olympics Aquatic Center. And Grevers did it in style as well, setting an Olympic record in the process with a time of 52.16, breaking the old mark of 52.54 seconds. Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers will be making his second appearance at the Olympics competing in men’s swimming. The Northwestern graduate will be looking to improve on his 2008 silver medal performance in the backstroke. Grevers will begin his competition in the 100m backstroke. His competition will begin with the preliminaries on Sunday at 11 a.m. London time or 5 a.m. here. Should Grevers advance to the semifinals, they will also be Sunday at 10:25 p.m. in London and 4:25 p.m. in Chicago. The top eight times in the semifinals will advance to the finals Monday at 7:56 p.m. in London time or 1:56 p.m. here. Lake Forest’s Jillian Schwartz will be competing for the Israeli team in the 2012 London Olympics in track and field. Schwartz, who competed for the United States in the pole vault in 2004, will have her competition begin August 4, with the finals August 6. On August 4, Schwartz will compete in the preliminary round with competition beginning at 10:20 a.m. London time or 4:20 a.m. here. Schwartz will have a preliminary jump and then will attempt to successfully complete the next qualifying height. She will continue at each height, unless she misses three times at a height and then is eliminated. Winnetka’s Conor Dwyer will be making his first Olympic appearance when he competes in men’s swimming at the London Olympics. The Loyola Academy graduate and Lake Forest Swim Club member will be competing in the 400 freestyle and will be part of the 800-relay team along with Charlie Houchin, Ryan Lochte, Matt McLean, Michael Phelps and Davis Tarwater. Dwyer will compete in the 400 freestyle preliminary heats Saturday at 10:50 a.m. London time or 4:50 a.m. Chicago team.
