The long-stalled Riverside Plaza project now faces another setback. John Breugelmans, the developer of Riverside Plaza, told Algonquin trustees during a Tuesday Committee of the Whole meeting he needs to convert the building in the downtown district from condominiums to apartments in order to make the project economically feasible. Following a two-hour heated discussion, most trustees reluctantly said they would be willing to compromise somewhat on the project. However, they want the complex to adhere to its original luxury status and stay at 54 units. Breugelmans must now bring his revised plans before the village planning and zoning committee before the village board revisits his request. Apartments Versus Condos: Board Spars Over …

The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin the extensive excavation and earthwork needed to construct the long-awaited Western Bypass.

Extensive earthwork and excavation will begin in the area north of Algonquin Road and west of Illinois 31 to prepare a rough outline of the new bypass route, an Illinois Department of Transportation press release states. The $70 million project would re-route traffic away from the downtown Algonquin area — and in particular, away from the intersection of Route 62 and Route 31 — in an effort to reduce congestion. The grading work should not disrupt traffic and will cost about $4.9 million, the press release states. The primary contractor is Ryan Incorporated Central, of Janesville, Wis. The work is …
Laura Jozwiak hopes that parting with a few pieces from her father's mask and figurine collection results in others enjoying the artwork in their homes.
If you walked into Laura Jozwiak’s Lake in the Hills home, you would see barren walls void of any pictures or decorations. She likes it that way and explains that it is related to the home where she grew up in Evanston. Her father, George Wolf, collected masks and other figurines from around the world during his travels. By the time he died two years ago at age 76, he had acquired more than 300 pieces of carved and painted wood. Some were adorned with fabric, sea shells, beads, or grass to resemble hair. “He searched every week for these treasures that he loved and displayed on every wall in the house where I grew up,” said Jozwiak, who has lived with her two daughters and husband in Lake in the Hills for the past 10 years. “I bet the …
