Officer Kori Koehler received a lifesaving award at the Algonquin Village Board meeting Tuesday.
In two very unrelated events in recent months, one Algonquin Police Department officer is credited with saving the lives of two area residents. Officer Kori Koehler was presented a lifesaving award at the Algonquin Village Board meeting Tuesday night for his role in saving the life of a man whose heart had stopped while at an area gym, and for assisting an area girl who had stopped breathing. The first event happened in September at Lifetime Fitness in Algonquin. Koehler was called to the gym regarding a man who had stopped breathing after he had been exercising on a treadmill, said Algonquin Police Chief Russell Laine during Tuesday's Village Board meeting. Luis A. Ruiz faces arson and criminal damage to property charges.
A 27-year-old Lake in the Hills man faces charges after police said he intentionally set a van on fire in Crystal Lake early Tuesday. Luis A. Ruiz, of 1507 Washington St., Lake in the Hills, is accused of setting fire to a Chevrolet van on Butternut Drive in Crystal Lake. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office was called to the vehicle blaze at 4:57 a.m. April 3. Police said they learned of Ruiz's involvement through witness statements and evidence found at the scene, according to a sheriff's office press release. Ruiz turned himself in Tuesday evening and was taken into custody at the McHenry County Correctional Facility. He was charged with felony arson and misdemeanor criminal damage to property. McHenry County ranked fifth out of the 102 counties in Illinois.
McHenry County residents are among the healthiest in the nation, according to recently released County Health Rankings. The report, which looks at a variety of health factors for counties throughout the nation, ranked McHenry County the fifth healthiest among the 102 counties in Illinois. The report was released Tuesday by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The ranking is a slight drop over last year when McHenry County ranked fourth in the state. “The County Health Rankings show us that much of what influences our health happens outside of the doctor’s office. In fact, where we live, learn, work and play has a big role in determining how healthy we are and how long we live,” …
The McHenry County Division of Transportation will be implementing modifications to the traffic signals at the intersection of Algonquin Road and Hansen/Hilltop roads.
With the hopes of improving the safety at one area intersection, the McHenry County Division of Transportation will modify a traffic signal at Algonquin and Hansen/Hilltop roads Thursday morning to include a green left turn arrow. Crews are expected to be out at the intersection between 9 a.m. and noon Thursday installing new traffic signal equipment, according to a McHenry County DOT press release. Minor delays are expected. Once the modifications are completed, motorists will be able to turn left on a green arrow, according to a press release. The purpose is to improve safety at the busy interesection. La Trattoria, an Italian restaurant, had been located in a strip mall at Lakewood and Ackman roads in Lake in the Hills.
La Trattoria — an Italian restaurant formerly located in Lake in the Hills — has hopes of moving to Algonquin Commons real soon. The restaurant closed the doors to its Lake in the Hills location and plans to reopen in the Algonquin Commons at 1748 S. Randall Road, said La Trattoria co-owner Theresa Scandurra. The restaurant had been located at 9541 Ackman Road — in a strip mall at Lakewood and Ackman roads in Lake in the Hills. The village of Algonquin liquor commission will consider granting the restaurant a liquor license during a special hearing tonight at Algonquin Village Hall, 2200 Harnish Drive. Nicholas C. Svoboda of Cary and Adam Pittner of Crystal Lake were both taken into custody in Lake in the Hills Sunday evening.
Two area teens are in custody after leading area police on a chase in a stolen car Sunday, police said Monday. Adam W. Pittner, 19, of 1181 Amberwood in Crystal Lake, and Nicholas C. Svoboda, 18, of 7 Hickory Lane in Cary, face several charges in conjunction with the incident, which was first reported Sunday afternoon and lead to their arrest hours later in Lake in the Hills. The Algonquin Police Department initially attempted to pull over them over near Algonquin and Frank roads Sunday after checking the license plate on their car and learning the 2011 Chevy Impala had been stolen, said Sgt.
