Huntley baseball coach Andy Jakubowski has suspended himself from coaching for the rest of the regular season after being arrested for driving under the influence and speeding early Sunday morning, according to McHenryCountySports.com. Jakubowski said he spent practice with his team on Monday and Tuesday before breaking the news to them on Wednesday about his decision not to coach, telling McHenryCountySports.com that "it was the hardest thing" he'd ever had to do. The Illinois High School Association approved new safety rules Wednesday to limit tackling in youth football practice in an effort to reduce head injuries, reported the Daily Herald. In March, a controversial bill sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) proposing to limit the number of days players could have full contact hitting practice (once a week) failed in the House committee. The new IHSA policy calls for coaches to gradually increase the time players can participate in preseason practice, along with the number of protective pads they can wear. Baseball fans flocked to Wrigley field on Monday for the Cubs' home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Opening day for the Chicago Cubs was full of interesting characters - as expected - including "Cubs Ivy Man." Cubs Ivy Man is the creation of Ward Tannhauser of Crystal Lake. Standing eight feet tall with an arm span of 13-feet wide, Cubs Ivy Man is a walking replica of the ivy-covered walls from Wrigley Field. He is so popular with Cubs fans that he has become a fixture at Chicago Cubs Opening Day celebrations, games, parades, fundraisers and other events. You may even spot Tannhauser zipping around Crystal Lake - in or out of costume - in a small black car with 'Ivy Man" license plates.
