A 2011 survey by Babson Survey Research Group found that nearly 23 percent of students in Illinois took blended learning classes, according to the Northwest Herald.
"Blended learning," a combination of online learning with traditional classroom instruction, is taking hold at Huntley High School with 500 of the high school's 2,393 students enrolled in the program this year and 1,300 students expected to enroll next year, according to the Northwest Herald. The blended learning classes were offered for the first time this year and allow students to complete online assignments while attending 47-minute classes at least two times per week, according to the Northwest Herald. While statewide enrollment at community college decreased by 2.5 percent in 2013, McHenry County College saw a 2.2 percent increase in this year's enrollment, according to a McHenry County College press release. The enrollment numbers were recently released as part of a Spring 2013 enrollment report from the Illinois Community College Board. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, between 2000 and 2010, nationwide enrollment at two-year institutions increased from 5.9 to 7.7 million students and is expected to reach 8.8 million students by 2021. While Jacobs, Crystal Lake, Huntley and Dundee-Crown high schools were not included in rankings recently released by Newsweek of the best high schools in the country, two area high schools did make the list. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the United States and about 2,500 schools responded in 2013. Cary-Grove High School was ranked as the 733rd best high school in the country while Prairie Ridge High School was ranked as the 767th best high school in the United States. Laura Arboleda will earn an associate degree from McHenry County College two weeks before she graduates from Crystal Lake South High School.
Crystal Lake South High School student Laura Arboleda will graduate this May with her high school diploma and an associate degree from McHenry County College. In fact, she will receive her MCC degree two weeks before her high school graduation. She plans to transfer in the fall to University of Florida, Gainesville, to pursue a bachelor’s degree in architecture. Arboleda wanted to get a jump-start on college and save money on tuition, so she enrolled in the Running Start program at MCC in summer 2010, where she started earning credit for college while still attending high school. “I realized that taking classes ahead of time would save me a considerable amount of money and I would accomplish my educational and career goals faster,” …

Senior Michael Geheren was named to the all state journalism team for the second year in a row.
For the second consecutive year, the Huntley High School journalism team brought home the second place finish in the Illinois High School Association State Journalism finals, according to a District 158 press release. Also for the second consecutive year, senior Michael Geheren was named to the Illinois Journalism Education Association’s All State Team at the state finals. Sen. Kirk and Sen. Durbin make first joint appearance in state at Great Lakes school along with Rep. Schneider.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield) made their first joint public appearance in Illinois since Kirk returned to full time duty in the Senate in January at a Great Lakes charter school they helped create which is now being hurt by the Sequester. Durbin, Kirk and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) met with students at the Learn Public Charter School, a North Chicago public school on the Great Lakes Naval Base, to see the new institution and listen to the students. “This is our first public appearance in Illinois since Sen. The Community High School District 155 Board at its Tuesday meeting approved appointments of new principals.
The Community High School District 155 Board of Education approved Scott Shepard and Dr. Steven Koch as the new principals for Crystal Lake South High School and Prairie Ridge High School, respectively. The appointments follow the February announcement that current principals Marsha Potthoff, at CL South, and Paul Humpa, at Prairie Ridge, will move into new positions for the 2013-2014 school year. The changes become effective on July 1, according to District 155 spokesperson Jeff Puma. District 155 conducted a national search that yielded nearly 80 qualified applicants for the principal positions. District 158 will be hosting a parent involvement workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1.
A parent involvement workshop centered around teaching parents how to become better involved in their child's education and better support their children will take place Wednesday evening at Chesak Elementary School, 10910 Reed Road in Lake in the Hills. The workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, and will feature guest speaker Lourdes Ferrer, a Hispanic academic achievement specialist in Hispanic parental involvement program development, motivational speaking, and school district academic achievement data research and analysis, according to the District 158 press release.
