Bunco is a simple dice-throwing game in which participants try to get the highest score or the most “Buncos,” a special three-of-a-kind dice roll.
Carol Platt, a volunteer at the pantry for about two years, was inspired by a Bunco charity event she recently attended in McHenry.
“It was so well-run, I thought, ‘I need to do this for the Algonquin food pantry.’” Platt is hoping for about 150 people to attend the Bloomin' Bunco Benefit.
Platt has been an Algonquin resident for almost 20 years, and she and her family regularly volunteer to help those in need.
“Last year our focus was Haiti,” she said. “This year I am concentrating more on the food pantry and on supporting our troops.”
She credits much of her fundraising successes to her supportive friends.
“What spurs us on is that we have such generous friends who are very kind and willing to participate,” she said. “I just got back from the house of a friend who made a beautiful necklace for a raffle prize.”
In addition, “the community has been fabulous,” Platt said. "Different members of the committee have gone up and down to the merchants in Algonquin and Lake in the Hills, and a great number of them have been very generous."
For example, and are both donating sweet treats for the event.
Pre-registration is required and due by Friday, April 1. The $25 fee includes a night of Bunco as well as prizes, raffles and dessert. You can register individually or as a group of 4, 8 or 12 if you want to play with your friends. The event starts at 7 p.m. at Neubert Elementary.
And don’t worry if you’ve never played Bunco before.
“We’ll talk about the rules and have a little practice round,” said Platt, “but honestly, after about three minutes, you’ll be an expert.”
