Consider Giving to Area Pet Rescues This Holiday Season

From used pet bowls to gift cards, cash to gift cards, your unwanted supplies can really make a difference for homeless animals.

When someone gave Lisa Reemer a shop-vac last week, she and her staff were overcome with tears. In their work with No Splitting Hares Bunny Rescue, the group is in need of money, supplies and support to take care of the 250-plus animals they're sheltering.

"Donations don’t have to be cash to make a difference," said Reemer, who founded the organization 3 years ago when she saw how therapeutic a pet rabbit was for her daughter, who has cerebral palsy. Now, Reemer is determined to place the hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits at her farmhouse in loving homes. She networks with several other rescue groups for dogs and cats, and often, they trade supplies.

"We've been known to take cat and dog food (donations) and trade it with other rescues for things we can use. "Used cages, used
dog and cat food bowls, feed, hay, water bottles, puppy pads, anything people aren't using means a lot."

Other items on the wish list for rescue groups include paper towel rolls, empty tissue boxes, towels of any kind, gift cards, gas cards, and cash.

"Veterinarians are increasing their fees, and rescue groups are really hurting," said Reemer.
