Health & Fitness

It's been a few weeks since the New Year, are you still on track?

New Years Resolutions: Are you still on track? What are New Years Resolutions anyway?

New Years Resolutions: Are you still on track? What are New Years Resolutions anyway? They are goals… things that people want to change about themselves to make their life better. People always want to make changes to some area of their life to improve it. New Years is the time of year that causes you to consider your past, look at your current life situation, and decide what you want to change to make your future brighter & better. This is great! You spend time considering what you want, you give thought to what you could (or should) change, and you decide to take action… what a great way to begin the New Year!

What’s wrong with this picture then? We should all be healthy, happy, and hopeful in our lives… but that is not the case. According to popular research (Psychology Today), half of us will set at least one New Years’ Resolution and the top resolutions are behavioral issues that relate to improving our health (quitting smoking, exercising, eating healthier). Why, then, do we continue to do this year after year (after year) if it works so well?

Because it doesn't! Most people fail in adhering to their stated New Year's resolutions. Specifically, 22% fail after one week, 40% after one month, 50% after three months, 60% after six months, and 81% after twenty-four months (Norcross& Vangarelli, 1988, as cited by Richard Koestner 2008, p. 60).

What can YOU do to improve your odds of keeping your own resolutions? Some common reasons that prevent people from succeeding are not establishing clear or attainable goals, not having accurate information relating to your goal, and lack of accountability and support. I can help you succeed, not just with your New Years’ resolutions, but with your life! Your goals should be long-term and ones that you can (and will) succeed at!
