Algonquin-Lake in the Hills 2013 Summer Camp Guide

It's time to think about summer and finding a fun camp.

 

A fun summer camp makes summer memorable and Algonquin has many types of camps to choose from this year. Here’s a guide to help get your search for the perfect summer camp started:

Algonquin Parks and Recreation Department

The parks department has a wide variety of camps, day to week-long sessions, to choose from this summer. The village is releasing its summer brochure in the next few weeks and registration will begin. A few highlights:

Early childhood camps

Where: various locations

Information: Little ones can experience summer camp too. Algonquin’s Parks and Recs has a Zoology Camp, Adventures in Story Land, Adventures in Science Camp and the ABC's and 123’s Camp. The camps are two weeks long.

Special interest camps

Where: various locations

Information: Learn to hip-hop or do a summer of musical theater camp. The village offers many specialized camps like Pom and Cheer camp and Flash Mob Camp.

Lake in the Hills Parks & Rec

 Where: 600 Harvest Gate, Lake in the Hills 

 Information: The village has camps for different ages, a full day camp for K to 8th grade.  Children will take fields trips to places like the Shedd Aquarium, Gameworks and other places. A summer brochure will be released soon, but LITH Parks and Rec is offering an early bird special. Families can save 10 percent each week by signing up early. The offer ends April 30.

Traditional summer camp

The YMCA has four resident camps located in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan that offer traditional sleep-away camp. A few locations:

Camp Duncan

Where: Near Fox Lake, Il.

Campers stay in cabins and are grouped according to age and gender. Children are always under staff supervision as they swim, do rope courses, archery, nature hikes and other activities.

Family Camp Nawakwa

Where: Lac de Flambeau, Wis.

Information: Parents can relive summer camp memories, or create new ones, at this unique family camp. The camp is home to the Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.

Chicago Storm Soccer Camps

Where: 700 Highland Ave., Algonquin

Information: Chicago Storm Soccer Camps gives children a chance to work with professional and collegiate soccer players and coaches. Campers will work on skills and build new ones.

Lifetime Fitness

Where: 451 Rolls Drive, Algonquin

Information: Members of Lifetime Fitness can sign their children up for any of the summer camps. Camps include: Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Sports, Rock Climbing and Swim, Cheerleading & Art. Ages vary for different camps.

Trinity Academy of Gymnastics

Where: 9162 Trinity Drive, Lake in the Hills

Information: The 10 week camp features weekly themes like Undersea Adventure,  Space Camp, Jungle Safari, Mountain Summit and Arctic Exploration. Each day includes training and games and crafts. The academy promises your child will be happy but tired.

Kingdom Rock Vacation Bible School

Information: Enter the epic adventure that empowers kids to stand strong! Here in Kingdom Rock, God’s victorious power isn’t a fairy tale – it changes kids forever.

Spotlight Youth Theater

Where: Various Locations

Information: Want to learn to Sing, Dance, & Act? Spotlight Youth Theater, based in Cary, offers full day summer camps for kids ages 5-18. Campers can choose from 3 different camp themes including Camp Pixar (featuring songs from Pixar movies), Disney's Heroes & Villains Camp (features hits from Disney classics), & Hairspray, our Teen Day Camp (featuring highlights from the tony award winning musical).
