Three Algonquin schools are joining in the National Walk to School Day on Wednesday to encourage children to enjoy a healthy, safe and fun trip to school.
Westfield Community School, Neubert Elementary and Algonquin Lakes Elementary will participate in the National Walk to School Day tomorrow, Oct. 9, according to the National Walk to School Day website.
Westfield begins classes at 8:15 a.m., and students are expecting to hit the sidewalks and walk to school, said Erin Nisi, co-president of Westfield Community School parents' organization.
The National Walk to School Day is a movement that communities and schools are using as the first step to change community culture and create options for getting around that are more inviting for everyone, both young and old, according to organizers.
Proponents point to the walking to school as fun and healthy for kids. Getting more kids walking to school also cuts down on traffic congestion and pollution.
