MCC Recognizes MLK Day, Black History Month

There will be several upcoming events held at the college.

McHenry County College will be recognizing Martin Luther King Day and African American History Month with several upcoming events. 

Today, students will be able to create “unity” beaded bracelets and pins in the Student Servicues atrium at the college, address, according to a MCC news release. There will also be birthday cake served to students throughout the day.

Jan. 26

A guest presentation by Barry Bradford, a former National Teacher of the Year and current Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American History, titled “Black Friday: The Murder of Abraham Lincoln.” The presentation will be at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the MCC Conference Center. Bradford is an award-winning storyteller and will touch on the conspiracy to murder Lincoln, according to the press release. This event is open to the public.

Feb. 4

Lunch & Learns, facilitated by social science instructor Robert Allare, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Room A113. The topic of discussion will be “Reaction to the death of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968”

Feb. 7

A film presentation of “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” will be shown from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the MCC Conference Center and is open to the public.

Feb. 9

Singers of the United Lands (S.O.U.L) will perform at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the MCC Conference Center. The annual event features musicians from four different continents, according to the press releae.  

Feb. 14

Lunch & Learn, facilitated by philosophy instructor Steve Young, Ph.D., from noon to 1 p.m. in Room B166-167. The topic of discussion will be “Religion & Resilience—The Story of the Nation of Islam.”

Feb. 16

A contest for student only -- Poetry Slam – will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Black Box Theatre, Room D167. Five finalists will receive $50 each and the top winner will have opportunity to perform poetry at Stage Left Café in Woodstock.

Feb. 22

Barry Bradford will presents “Is It Ever Too Late to Do the Right Thing?” at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the MCC Conference Center.

Feb. 24

Lunch & Learn, facilitated by sociology instructors Sheila Venkataswamy and Mark Eckel, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room A242. The topic of discussion will be “Race in the White City”

Feb. 26

MCC student trip (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to Milton House Museum, Milton, Wis. Milton House Museum is a national historic landmark and was a site for an Underground Railroad stop with a unique tunnel that hid the slaves, according to the MCC press release.

Feb. 28

The Black Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the MCC Commons and Cafeteria. There will be a   jazz ensemble held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a soul food buffet at noon
