The Young Authors Conference, an event co-sponsored by the Illinois Language and Literacy Council and the Illinois Reading Council, is a celebration of the written work of children in kindergarten through grade 8.

The purpose of the conference is to support classroom teachers in their efforts to encourage and improve students’ abilities in writing, reading, listening, and sharing, and to recognize the accomplishments of young authors.

The program also integrates writing instruction in a way that allows children to be inspired to become great writers, and the books serve as an assessment of a student’s continued development as a writer.

Classroom teachers carefully review each book written and select two to three classroom winners. Those books then move on to the final round of judging, in which volunteers from the community are charged with the difficult task of selecting the building-level winner.
