In 4-3 Vote, D300 Approves 363 Layoffs

Officials anticipate being able to call back roughly half at the start of next school year.

Wednesday evening at a special public hearing, the District 300 school board voted 4-3 to allow the administration to layoff 363 educators, according to a Chicago Tribune article.

Hundreds of people attended the forum at Westfield’s gymnasium, where mostly students voiced their opinions about the layoffs, scheduled to take place at the end of this school year.

Officials said there would likely be call-backs and estimate the final cuts being somewhere between 75 and 150, according to a Northwest Herald article. The district is discussing the cuts now to meet statutory and contractual guidelines.

The layoffs are necessary to deal with a $5 million deficit, due largely to the state not making its payments, school officials said.
