District 300 to Vote on Charter School Proposal

The District 300 Board of Education will meet on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The District 300 Board of Education will vote to deny a proposal from an online charter school during Monday's meeting, according to the school board agenda.

Illinois Virtual Learning Solutions, an offshoot of K12 Inc., which is based in Virginia and manages online learning schools in 27 states, proposed the charter school, which was meant to service under served students in 18 area school districts, including District 300, according to the Northwest Herald.

The company has drawn criticism for its for-profit status while seeing low student achievement and high turnover rates of its teachers, according to the New York Times.

During a public hearing in Elgin's U-46 last month, Elgin Teachers Association, Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice, and League of Women Voters of Illinois—as well as district residents and teachers—urged the U-46 school board to reject the proposal, according to the Daily Herald. U-46 will vote on the proposal in April.

Many other school boards have questioned the proposal, including Geneva School District 304, according to the Kane County Chronicle.
