District 300 School Board Approves $20M Tax Levy Increase

The District 300 Board of Education approved the tax levy increase on Monday.

Most property owners in District 300 can expect to pay more in taxes after the District 300 board of education approved a $20 million increase to its property tax levy during Monday's meeting, according to the Northwest Herald.

The levy increase "is tied to declining state funding, increasing government mandates and rising student enrollment," according to the article. Projections show the increase will mean the owner of a $200,000 home will pay the schools district $144 in property taxes in 2013, according to the NW Herald.

This crazy and unacceptable!! How does the school board expect residence to pay more in taxes when we are already having financial problems due to unemployment or lower wages. Did they take that into to consideration?? Does not seem fair that teachers can strike because of pay rate and benefits etc.. well others working in the private sector have to continue to work and take pay cuts due to the economy or they will lose their jobs but then are also expected to pay more in taxes to pay for school district salary increases and benefits, etc... What is wrong with this picture??

This happens every year and the same time. Unfortunately because of timing it will be perceived to be tied into the strike when in fact they are separate issues.

Doesn't anyone know how to say "NO" to these unions and mean it? But wait, it's for the children! My eye it is! I wonder if I can pull that with my boss, "but Boss, it's for the customers." Right.

Teachers feel they are special and the Unions want more money in their pockets . More money does not give kids a better education just insures that teachers can retire with a 110k a year pension.

District 300 is a bunch of criminals. How can they by the stroke of a pen raise my taxes by over $700 on a $300K home? (The above estimate is way off! I just looked at my actual tax bill... homeowners will be in shock.) It's time to fight back against arbitrary taxation without representation.
