District 300 Launches Support Program for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

In Illinois, over 200,000 children under the age of 18 years old are living in a grandparent-headed home.

District 300 recently launched a new support program meant to assist grandparents who are raising grandchildren in the district.

A district committee is being formed to help senior citizens connect and provide them with valuable resources to help them raise their grandchildren, according to a District 300 press release.

In Illinois, over 200,000 children under the age of 18 years old are living in a grandparent-headed home. More than 100,000 grandparents are caring for their grandchildren.

"D300 recognizes and would like to assist those grandparents who are actively parenting students in our schools," according to the news release.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the district committee can contact Dr. Joan McGarry at 847-551-8489 or at joan.mcgarry@d300.org.

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren committee will hold meetings open to the public on the following dates: Thursday, March 14; Thursday, April 11; and Thursday, May 9, according to the news release.

All meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the second floor Media Center Annex at Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville. A light dinner will be served, and childcare will be available at the meetings.
