D300 Recalls 363 Laid-Off Teachers

At a special meeting Wednesday night, the school board approved a new one-year teachers' union contract that involves a salary freeze.

Wednesday night at a special public meeting, the D300 school board approved a new one-year contract with the teachers’ union that will bring back 363 educators who were cut in March.

On Friday, the D300 communication services released a press release stating that the , with no other details released.

On Tuesday, the contract was ratified by LEAD 300, and according to a Courier-News article, the contract includes more than $3.5 million in concessions from the teachers’ union.

The contract, which starts July 1, 2011, and runs through June 30, 2012, contains the following:

  • A salary freeze for the year.
  • Changes to the insurance plan.
  • Changes in overload, lunch duty and bus duty pay.
  • Calendar changes to better facilitate academic needs.
  • Creation of a Collaborative Council to address ongoing district educational initiatives and programs.

In addition to approving the LEAD contract and recalling staff, the board also approved a salary freeze for all administrators.

To close an $8 million budget gap, the school board decided in a 4-3 vote to cut 363 teachers as well as reorganize the district's secondary schools in March. The new contract agreement eliminates the reorganization plan, which would have saved the district $5 million.
