Crystal Lake South Choir to Perform at White Sox Game

The high school's A Capella singers are scheduled to sing the national anthem on April 8 at U.S. Cellular Field.

Crystal Lake South’s A Capella Choir will sing the national anthem this week at the Chicago White Sox game, and the choir director expects the group to deliver a home-run performance.

“They do the anthem frequently throughout the year,” Crystal Lake South Choir Director Matt Koll said, with a laugh. “They’ve performed it for several games. They know it so well they don’t even really need to practice it.”

The A Capella Choir will make the trip to U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago this Friday to perform during an opening week game between The Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays. The game starts at 7:10 p.m.

Last year, Koll mailed an audition tape to the White Sox organization and the choir group was thrilled to be accepted.

“The kids loved it so much, we decided to do it again,” Koll said. “The hardest part is getting them all down there.”

The outing also serves as a fundraiser for the club as the Chicago White Sox shares a portion of the proceeds with the choir. Tickets are on sale now for $17 and $35 and available by contacting Koll at mkoll@d155.org.

The A Capella Choir is made up of mostly juniors and seniors from and includes both boys and girls, Koll said.

Crystal Lake South has four choirs that meet during regular class time: Beginning Treble Choir for girls; Men’s Choir; Advanced Treble Choir for girls; and the A Capella Choir.

The school also has three additional choirs that meet after school. Those include the Madrigals, the Court Singers and the Glee Club, a group of 25 singers formed just this year, Koll said.
