Conley Elementary Students Get Hooked on Books with Battle of the Books

Students showcased their knowledge of the books they read by playing four different types of quiz games: Family Feud, Academic Whiz Kid, Super Challenge and Relay.

Fourth grade students at Conley Elementary displayed their knowledge of many excellent books in the first annual Battle of the Books on May 6, 2011.  Students worked in teams to read books listed on common book lists. They prepared notes about the books they read and discussed these with their teammates in order to ensure that all team members would be prepared for the Battle. 

On Friday, May 6, students had the opportunity to showcase their knowledge of the books they read by playing four different types of quiz games – Family Feud, Academic Whiz Kid, Super Challenge, and Relay.  The two highest scoring teams after eight preliminary rounds participated in the final Battle of the Books emceed by Dr. John Burkey, Superintendent and Mr. Mark Altmayer, Chief Financial Officer.

The two teams earning a place in the final round were the Shrimp and the Angel Fish.  These teams answered difficult questions pertaining to their books.  Members of the Shrimp team included Connor Turkington, Jake Sutter, Lauren Wilcox, Katelyn Carlson, Gabby Hede, and Ethan Gawronski.  Team Angel Fish members included Bob Chen, Sabrina Ligeza, Alexandra Stevens, Brendan Brown, and Phil Parzygnat.  After an exciting battle, the Shrimp prevailed and won the Battle of the Books.

The staff and administration of Conley Elementary School would like to thank the many wonderful volunteers who came to help with this event.  Whether volunteers guided students to the correct venue for their quiz round or judged students’ answers, their help was instrumental in making this event successful.
