Area Spellers to Compete at Marlowe for Trip to National Bee

The spelling bee will start at 6 p.m. at Marlowe Middle School, 9625 Haligus Road in Lake in the Hills.

Marlowe Middle School seventh grade student Carlos Mendez will join middle school students from the area to compete in a regional spelling bee today at 

The top speller at tonight's bee will advance to the national spelling bee. 

Mendez won Marlowe's school-wide bee on Jan. 11. He competed against 18 different sixth, seventh and eighth graders who were selected as top spellers at Marlowe, according to a District 158 press release.

Marlowe eighth grade student Jonathon Velazquez came in second place and eighth grade student Jack Sover came in third place at the school-wide bee. 

Mendez will join the top spellers from eight other schools at a Regional Spelling Bee, which will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Marlowe Middle School, 9625 Haligus Road in Lake in the Hills.

The other schools competing will be: Riley School, Harvard Jr. High School, Crosby Elementary School, Marengo Middle School, St. Joseph Catholic School, St. Margaret Mary School and Zion Lutheran School.
