A Kid's Best Summer Friend: The Ice Cream Man

Who else can rock my kids' world like the Ice Cream Man?

Who else can cause terror in my children at the thought of not catching up with the Ice Cream Man?

Who else can have my sweet little girls careening through the house and running out barefoot at 20 MPH  besides the Ice Cream Man?

It happened, just minutes ago....a nice peaceful, sunny afternoon, spliced through by the sweet musical sounds and serious sense of urgency...by none other, than the Ice Cream Man.  Of course I had to let them go....run down the street, barefoot, just the two of them (only 7 years old!), due to the desperation and urgency of their pleas for ice cream.  Completely forgetting about our fun and tasty trip to Coldstone just yesterday, these mild-mannered girls ratchet it up to complete hysteria when the sound of the Ice Cream Man rings through the neighborhood.

And I have to chuckle....at a world that paces itself at the speed of light...where information travels real-time, and where gadgets, distractions and other preoccupations abound...the Ice Cream Man still reigns supreme. 

And besides the drive-in movies and all day at the pool, I can't think of one other summer tradition that carries itself through the generations like this.  So thank you Ice Cream Man, for reminding me of the joys of summer and the memories we make with our children....to last a lifetime.
