Vandalism of Signs Pops Up in Area as Election Nears

Have you witnessed any vandalism of election signs in the area? Let us know in the comments' section below.

One Cary homeowner took matters into her own hands when her Barack Obama election signs were stolen.

Becky Deignan, of 10 Boxwood Lane in Cary, placed several signs in her yard that read "resting place of stolen Obama sign" on one and "fear & oppression on another" and "unbecoming & un-American" on another, according to her Facebook page.

The signs remained up in the yard Friday just days before Tuesday's election.

Nancy Schwab, who lives in a subdivision north of Woodstock, said her Dennis Anderson sign was cut to resemble a part of the male anatomy. A black marker was used to draw a similar "design" on Schwab's Barack Obama sign.

"I didn't think I could get any more disgusted with the Republicans," Schwab said. "They will remain on my lawn until the election or until someone steals them."

The vandalism is by no means a partisan issue — but Patch.com did not receive any other examples of vandalized signs in the area by the time this article is published. Patch.com readers are encouraged to comment below on other issues of vandalism they have witnessed in the area.

Algonquin and Lake in the Hills police departments have not received any reports this election season of sign vandalism.

"We have had issues in the past. Just sporadic incidents of kids that have knocked over a sign or on that is missing or something along those lines but this year has been really quiet," said Algonquin Police Department Sgt. Ryan Markham.

Charges of theft or defacing property could be issued in the cases of vandalism though.

"If someone (for example) stole one and the owner wished to proceed with charges, he could. But we have never come across that happening," Markham said.
