Sunset Parks Goes Green

The Lake in the Hills Village Board approved a contract bid during a meeting last week to add solar-powered trash compactors to Sunset Park.

Sunset Park is going green.

The on Thursday night approved a contract bid with Stepp Equipment Company to buy five solar-powered trash compactors and two recycling containers for $33,344.

The trash compactor and bottle-and-can recycling combination units will be set up at , 5200 Miller Road, as part of state grant program.

The compactor is meant to decrease garbage by compacting four containers worth of trash into one. The solar-powered units also will save on village manpower needed to collect the trash, said Parks and Recreation Department Director Trudy Wakeman.

Funds to pay for the receptacles come from a $100,000 Illinois grant awarded to the village for the purpose of enhancing Sunset Park.

Part of the money already has gone toward new bleachers at a Sunset Park baseball field. The money also will help fund a new bathroom facility with a vaulted ceiling being built near the skateboard park and football fields, Wakeman said.
