Proposed Tree Memorial Discussed

A permanent memorial would be an answer to the numerous requests that the village gets for memorial tree donations each year.

Last month, village officials discussed plans to create a permanent memorial in the village for those wishing to honor loved ones.

Bob Mitchard, public works director, presented the proposed memorial for Steve Ludwig, forestry superintendent, at the Feb. 22 committee of the whole meeting.

Mitchard said a permanent memorial would be an answer to the numerous requests that the village gets for memorial tree donations each year. Some issues that the forestry department has come across with memorial tree donations have to do with tree longevity and maintenance.

The recommendation that Mitchard presented was for the village to create a perpetual memorial tree made of brass to be located in village hall, in addition to tree planting. That way once the lifespan of a tree has run its course, the plaque would stand to be a permanent memorial.

The program would be self-funding and residents could a tree in honor of a loved one. The cost would be about $300 and would include the cost of the tree, as well as the engraved brass leaf.

While nothing is set in stone, officials agreed to revisit the idea of a tree memorial at a later date.
